Ranking Most Attractive NFL Openings For Head Coaches

This is turning into one of the most entertaining coaching carousels in recent memory.

It has everything to this point. Many jobs are open, hot young candidates are emerging, but there are also coaches who have had great success for years and years.

A quarter of the league will be looking for a new coach on the sidelines and this means there are many options for candidates. This is how the openings seem to rank when looking at the most attractive situations.

8. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers just fired their head coach in less than a year for the second straight season. Safe to say that job security is not high on the priority list in Carolina. The Panthers do not have a first-round pick this season, which would have been No. 1 overall, after trading it to the Chicago Bears last year to move up. So a new coach will come into a situation without the ability to add his own quarterback and with a hostile owner. Not the best.

7. New England Patriots

It is now officially. After months of speculation, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have parted ways. The 71-year-old has expressed interest in coaching next season and will be a sought-after option.

The Patriots will also be looking for a new head coach but the position might not be the best.

First, going into replace Belichick and all of the success be had in Foxborough will be difficult. Is this a factor? Most likely no but it is a narrative for fans to discuss. The starting quarterback of the future is not on the roster at the moment but the Patriots hold the third-overall pick in the draft.

This remains the key selling point because the rest of the roster lacks talent, especially at the wide receiver position. There will be a lot of work to be done to this roster for New England to return to the postseason.

6. Tennessee Titans

The Titans letting go of Mike Vrabel came as a surprise but it makes you wonder if the plan has been for him to return to New England to replace Belichick. This would be the best-case scenario for both sides.

Vrabel leaves a Titans’ team that drafted Will Levis last year and will likely have to give him another season to prove himself. Derrick Henry will likely be leaving in free agency and who knows about the future of DeAndre Hopkins.

Tennessee could be looking at a complete rebuild and this includes assets in the front office as well.

5. Las Vegas Raiders

Question marks seem to be the theme of the Raiders this offseason. That sounds familiar for Mark Davis and his team.

The Raiders let Derek Carr go and decided to bring in Jimmy Garoppolo. That experiment did not work. Aidan O’Connell got a chance to showcase himself but did not leave many to believe that he is the next franchise quarterback.

Davante Adams remains on the roster but for how long? He seems to be unhappy with the current situation and could be looking for a trade. Defensively, Maxx Crosby and Kolton Miller lead the way of a scattered group.

Antonio Pierce should be the first option for the Raiders after the job he was able to do as interim this season.

4. Atlanta Falcons

Arthur Smith was well, not good. The Falcons could even be a spot higher on this list but land fourth because of overall depth.

While the depth might not be the best, the Falcons will be in a position to land a quarterback to go with Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. The pieces are there offensively. Now the team needs someone that can put it all together.

The Falcons have been linked to an experienced coach, whether that is Bill Belichick or someone else. It is clear that owner Arthur Blank is looking to turn things around quickly for his team.

3. Seattle Seahawks

One of the surprises of the offseason includes Pete Carroll being moved from head coach to advisor for the Seattle Seahawks. Now, a new coach will enter a situation for a team that came close to a playoff spot this season.

Just how attractive is the Seattle job? That is yet to be seen.

Geno Smith is still under contract and has shown that he can play in the NFL but is not more than a middle-of-the-pack starter. This means that the Seahawks might be able to continue to compete for the postseason but will not be taking that next step as a Super Bowl contender.

With that being said, there are attractive young players on the offensive side of the ball. This includes Kenneth Walker III, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and of course D.K. Metcalf.

2. Washington Commanders

It’s crazy to see Washington ranked this high and quite frankly, the Commanders could have come in at No. 1 on this list.

Josh Harris is entering his first full offseason as owner of the franchise and is already making major organizational moves. This includes letting go of Ron Rivera and setting up interviews with the likes of Adam Peters and Ian Cunningham to add to the front office.

Not only has Harris showed a dedication to rebuilding, Washington has plenty of assets that are attractive to a head coach. The Commanders currently hold the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and five picks in the Top 100. Washington also has the most cap space this offseason at just under $80 million.

A new head coach will be coming in to work with a better owner, new front office, new quarterback, and have the overall ability to build the team the way it wants to right away. Overall, with all of the assets available, Washington has one of the most attractive situations in the league.

1. Los Angeles Chargers

Brandon Staley is finally out of the door in Los Angeles and this means the Chargers can begin the search for the coach that they hope will lead them to a Super Bowl.

This has been the goal for the Chargers each year but have come up drastically short under Staley. He was unable to maximize the talent on the team and that was the major issue. It begins with Justin Hebert. This is the reason that Los Angeles seems like the most attractive job this season. The quarterback is in place along with elite receivers in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

The defense for the Chargers is also strong but it would benefit the team to hire an offensive-minded coach to led the charge.

The Chargers play in a highly-competitive division but have the assets to compete right away if the right coach is brought in.
