Rangers Win Wild 9-7 Extra Innings Contest Over Red Sox To Snap Skid

Entering play on Wednesday, seemingly nothing was going the Texas Rangers’ way.

Since the all-star break, Texas was just 9-15 had lost 8 of their first 12 games in August, and were on the verge of being swept by the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park.

Adolis Garica was one of the big stories in this one as he clubbed two home runs to bring his road trip hit total to 11.

In the same inning of Garcia’s second round-tripper, Texas would tie the game when Leody Taveras ripped a ball off Red Sox shortstop David Hamilton’s glove to knot things at four.

David Robertson came on in the 8th inning and unlike much of his season, he struggled giving up three earned runs as Boston jumped ahead 7-4 and things looked like they were once again not going to fall the Rangers’ way.

With Texas down to their final out in the ninth and with two runners on, Wyatt Langford smacked a three-run home run over the Green Monster to deliver the biggest swing of his young big league career.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the only other rookie in Rangers history to hit a game-tying 2-out HR in the 9th-or-later was Ruben Sierra on 6/6/86 vs. SEA.

Matt Festa would throw a strong ninth inning to send the game into extra innings where the Rangers were 6-2 entering the night but had just fallen to Boston in extras on Monday night.

Jonah Heim led off the tenth inning by lining a ball into the Red Sox bullpen to give Texas a huge 9-7 lead.

“That’s just a great baseball game” Heim said after the game. “I don’t get that chance unless Langford does what he does in the ninth so big swing by him, big team win”.

Rangers all-star closer Kirby Yates earned his 21st save in as many tries and Texas picked up a win they so desperately needed.

Following the win, manager Burce Bochy put it best “We needed this one in the worst way”.

According to STATS, it was the Rangers’ 1st win when trailing by 3+ runs with 2 outs in the 9th-inning-or-later since 6/9/07 vs. MIL—the last such win by Texas on the road?: 6/12/90 at OAK.
