Rangers Lose A Pair Of Starting Pitchers For Remainder Of 2024 Season

The thin Texas Rangers starting rotation just got even thinner on Monday afternoon when Bruce Bochy announced they would be without a pair of starters for the rest of the 2024 season.

Prior to the Rangers’ 7-4 walk-off win against the Yankees, it was announced that both Jon Gray and Tyler Mahle would not return to the mound this season due to injuries.

Gray was placed on the 15-day IL before Monday’s game with a right foot neuroma something unrelated to his groin issues which have sidelined him twice this season and multiple times in his three-year stint with Texas.

“It’s at a point where we’ve got to take care of this,” Bochy said when speaking about Gray’s injury.

“Surgery is an option, that’s what we’re talking about now. We’re also exploring other options. He had it a little bit last year, and it’s coming back this year. We’re just at a point where it’s affecting him. Now you’re putting the pitcher at risk, it changes his delivery. We’re just looking after him, trying to take care of him.”

2024 hasn’t been the most kind to Jon Gray who has an ERA of 4.47 in 102.2 IP (19 starts). In his last two starts, Gray has given up 11 earned runs in 6.2 innings against the Guardians and A’s.

With Gray being under contract for one more season, the Rangers see him impacting their club in 2025 whether that’s from the rotation or the bullpen.

Another player who is under contract for 2025 who likely won’t be coming back this season is Tyler Mahle who made just three starts for the Rangers after returning from Tommy John surgery.

“Right now, we’re pretty much shutting him down,” Bochy said. “He’s going to play catch and throw and all that. But I don’t think we’ll see another start. I’m not ruling it out completely, but why take that risk and rush him back?”

Mahle went on the 15-day IL last month due to right shoulder tightness and although it doesn’t sound like any too serious is going on, the Rangers clearly won’t be rushing him back this season.

Currently, the Rangers rotation features a mix of Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Heaney, Cody Bradford, and Jack Leiter but it could see some more reinforcements come soon.

Both Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer are expected to return this season as we enter the final few weeks of 2024.

deGrom likely has one more rehab start in AA Frisco this Saturday or could just skip that start and make his Rangers debut, although Bruce Bochy acknowledged that option is not likely.

Max Scherzer faced live hitters at Globe Life Field on Tuesday and will also make a rehab start on Saturday, his coming in Las Vegas with AAA Round Rock.
