Rangers Add Three To 40 Man Roster To Avoid Rule Five Draft
Coming into the day, the Texas Rangers 40-man roster sat at 37 leaving three slots to be filled before the 5:00 PM CST deadline to add players in order to protect them from the Rule Five Draft.
The Rangers officially added pitching prospects Emiliano Teodo and Winston Santos in addition to infielder Max Acosta.
In addition to adding three to their 40-man roster, the Rangers also returned RHP Carson Coleman to the New York Yankees after he missed all of 2024 with Tommy John. Texas selected Coleman in last year’s Rule Five Draft.
Texas’ 40-man roster currently sits at 39. Three of which are now new additions.
Teodo emerged as one of the Rangers’ top prospects after he went 5-4 with a 1.98 ERA in 86.1 innings with AA Frisco last season.
In July Teodo started the Futures Game held at Globe Life Field and became the first pitcher in Futures Game history to toss two perfect frames.
Teodo can hit 100+ MPH with his fastball with elite-level breaking stuff. He could land in AAA to start the season after spending all of last year at Frisco.
Santos spent time with both AA Frisco and high A Hickory this season going 11-6 with a 3.67 ERA across both levels.
In the same Futures Game that Teodo started, Santos came on and finished what ended up being a 6-1 National League Win.
Acosta hit .288 with eight home runs and 58 RBI in 104 games for AA Frisco this season. In the AFL hit .388 with a home run and 17 RBI.
Much like any other infield prospect in the Rangers organization, it’s unclear where Acosta fits into the near future but Texas clearly believes in his talent.
As for who the Rangers didn’t protect, there are some notable prospects now available to the rest of the league.
Two players who very well could be of interest to the rest of the Majors are RHP Josh Stephen and LHP Bryan Magdaleno.
Other notable Rangers prospects left off were 1st basemen Abi Ortiz and Blane Crim as well as RHP Ryan Garcia and outfielder Aaron Zavala.
