Rangers Acquire Andrew Chafin In Exchange For Two Pitching Prospects
If you thought the Texas Rangers would be sellers at the Trade Deadline and would just punt the rest of their 2024 season, you would be dead wrong.
Multiple sources confirmed that the Rangers have acquired Andrew Chaffin from the Detriot Tigers in exchange for pitching prospects Chase Lee and Joseph Montalvo.
In 41 relief appearances for the Tigers this season, Chaffin has gone 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA. In his last 17 appearances, Chaffin has given up just one earned run.
Chafin has another year of club control beyond 2024 after he signed a 1 year 4.75 million dollar deal with a club option for 2025 this offseason. If Texas chooses to opt into Chafin’s option for 2025, he will be owed 6.5 million.
To make room for Andrew Chaffin on both the 40 and 26-man rosters, the Rangers have designed Jonathan Hernandez for assignment after he had a 5.05 ERA in 41 innings pitched this season.
As for what the Rangers lost, Chase Lee was once considered a contender to be called up and help a struggling bullpen last season.
Lee has thrown just 14 innings this season after recovering from hip surgery he underwent last offseason. With both the Arizona Complex League Rangers and AAA Round Rock, Lee has a 1.93 ERA in those 14 innings.
Joseph Montalvo has a 4-2 record with a 2.44 ERA in 13 starts with High A Hickory this season. The right-hander has gone 15-4 with a 2.63 ERA (52 ER/177.2 IP) in 45 career games/31 starts over three seasons in the Rangers organization.
Andrew Chaffin will join a Rangers bullpen that features just one lefty in Jacob Latz. Opposing left-handers are batting just .180/.261/.312/.474 (11-61) with no home runs off the Chafin in 2024.
