Raiders Hire Chip Kelly to be Offensive Coordinator
Wake up Raider Nation! The Luka Doncic trade isn’t the only thing that’s in the spotlight. Things are coming together for the Raiders and the pieces are fitting into the puzzle properly. They’ve hired the manager, head coach, brought back the staff from last season, and now finally have solved the offensive side of the ball.
They’ve hired Chip Kelly to be their offensive coordinator. Kelly is a good football mind and a creative offensive coordinator, who will bring plenty to the table.
Kelly is a Good Hire for the Raiders
The bar is extremely low for the Raiders offensively. This is a team that was inept to being good offensively and struggled mightily. They finished 29th in points, and were dead last in rushing yards and average rushing yards. Furthermore, they were a pass heavy offense and struggled mightily in that regard too. Props to them for turning two players into 1000+ receiving yard players in 2024. But this offense has serious issues and it all stems from the quarterback position.
The Raiders will still have time to figure out that position. They have the sixth pick in the upcoming draft and also have free agency coming up. Aidan O’Connell is still in the fold and will still garner a look. But Kelly will help look to revive a run game for the Raiders that’s been dead in 2024.
Kelly comes with success at the NFL level. You can maybe argue success as the head coach, but as an offense it thrived. His last stint was with the Philadelphia Eagles, where Kelly had the Eagles as a top five scoring offense in 2013 and 2014. Here is where his offenses ranked as the lead man for the Eagles
2013 (Eagles)
Points: 4th
Passing: 9th
Rushing: 1st
2014 (Eagles)
Points: 3rd
Passing: 6th
Rushing: 9th
2015 (Eagles)
Points: 13th
Passing: 12th
Rushing: 14th
As a Raiders fan that has struggled mightily to watch this team try and perform offensively, this is a bright light in some dark times. Also, he is coming into the room after winning a National Championship as the offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
They were second in points, fourth in yards, had a strong pass game, and ranked 18th in rushing yards. That’s huge and he has the tools to work with.
Kelly Working With Carroll is Huge
Putting Kelly and Carroll together could be a match made in heaven. Both are good football minds and they have tools in the tool shed to work with. Brock Bowers, Jakobi Meyers, even Tre Tucker help highlight the skill position players. There is potential with Sincere McCormick, but if the Raiders are going to have any success, they need to evaluate the run game and allow it to take pressure off whoever is under center.
For the first time in a long time, the Raiders are making the right moves and it’s a great feeling.
