Punched Out: Cleveland Guardians Get Two Hits in 3-0 Loss to Pittsburgh Pirates
The Cleveland Guardians didn’t have any ammunition left over from Friday night, as the Pittsburgh Pirates scored a 3-0 win at Progressive Field on Saturday.
The Guardians had unloaded their arsenal in a 10-8 win to open the series.
If you want a silver living, Guardians starter Matthew Boyd (1-1) looked great again.
He pitched six innings and gave up four hits and a run. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight.
Boyd stepping up as a reliable starter is an encouraging sign for Cleveland’s postseason chances.
LET’S GET ROWDY
Andrew McCutchen put the Pirates on the board in the fourth inning with a bloop single to right, scoring Nick Gonzales.
Cleveland could not generate any offense against Luis Ortiz (6-4). He had a no-hitter until Bo Naylor singled in the fourth.
Josh Naylor doubled in the seventh for Cleveland’s only other hit.
Rowdy Telez drove in the Pirates’ other two runs on a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning.
Kansas City and Minnesota both lost, so the Guardians are ahead of those teams in the AL Central by 2½ and 3½ games, respectively.
SUNDAY SHOWDOWN
Cleveland and Pittsburgh will meet again on Sunday afternoon, but it’s not football season quite yet.
Alex Cobb (1-1) will start for the Guardians, while the Pirates will counter with Mitch Keller (11-8). First pitch is set for 1:40 p.m.
