Predicting the Outcome of Steelers Camp Battles: Offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter Training Camp with a brand-new offense ready to shake off the ghosts of the past few years of complete ineptitude. Despite fans’ well-deserved excitement about the changes and potential upgrades from Play-caller to Quarterback, there’s going to be a learning curve for this group.

As the battles for roster spots commence in Latrobe, there are plenty of intriguing storylines to watch. Let’s predict the biggest battles on Offense as the Steelers 2024 Season rapidly approaches.

Battle for Starting Quarterback: Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields

Winner: Wilson

While I believe Russ has a major leg up on Fields in the QB competition, I’m not giving up on the idea that Fields could do something special in Camp and Preseason to snatch the QB1 spot away from the 35 year-old vet. Fields is as dynamic a playmaker as any QB in football, but his lack of consistency could be his downfall when it comes to taking on Wilson this summer. In the end, I think the 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers are built for Russell Wilson, and don’t be surprised if he turns back the clock enough to make the Steelers scary in the AFC this season.

Battle for Wide Receiver 2: Calvin Austin III vs. Van Jefferson vs. Roman Wilson

Winner: Calvin Austin III

At this point, all the hype around CA3 coming from different places in the organization can’t be hyperbole. Austin is turning heads on the field and his speed and quickness could be a massive boost to the Steelers’ chances of being truly dynamic on Offense in 2024. Van Jefferson is the more veteran player and has experience in Arthur Smith’s offensive system, but he can’t match Austin’s explosiveness. The dark horse here is the Rookie Roman Wilson, who definitely does have the explosiveness and all-round ability to challenge for the role of WR2. If Wilson can prove to be a valuable asset in the run game and down the field, it could be hard to keep him off the field if you’re Pittsburgh.

Battle for Starting Left Tackle: Dan Moore Jr. vs. Broderick Jones

Winner: Broderick Jones

This one is fairly simple: the Steelers traded up in the 1st Round of the 2023 NFL Draft to select their LT of the future in Jones, and they’re not going to waste that for a middling starter like Dan Moore, Jr. I wouldn’t be surprised if DMJ is a trade candidate during camp this year, much like Kendrick Greene and Kevin Dotson were last offseason. If the Steelers are smart, they won’t waste another year of Jones’ upside at LT.

Battle for Starting Center: Nate Herbig vs. Zach Frazier

Winner: Zach Frazier

Herbig is technically listed as a Guard on the Steelers official roster, however, he happens to be the stand in starter at Center with 2024 2nd Round selection, Zach Frazier, the main competition. In the end, Frazier is actually more experienced at Center than Herbig, and he fits the Steelers physical style up front. While I wouldn’t be surprised if Herbig takes a lot of starter reps early on, I fully expect Frazier to be the full-time starter by Week 1.

There are other offensive position battles to watch, such as the RB3 competition between Cordarrelle Patterson, Aaron Shampklin, La’Mical Perine, and Daijun Edwards, as well as the TE3 spot between Connor Heyward, MyCole Pruitt, and Rodney Williams. It’s exciting to look ahead to what will be an intriguing month of camp and preseason action.

As die-hard Steelers fans consume every second of coverage over the team’s time in Latrobe, the storylines will shift and the plot will thicken. You can be sure the Steel Curtain Network will have plenty of coverage for all of it!
