Potential Landing Spots For Available QBs During NFL Offseason

The NFL offseason is underway and will intensify next week as free agency begins on Wednesday.

The most important position on the field will not be without dramatics as there could be a bit of a shuffling once again. This is not only from quarterback-needy teams, outside of a group with top picks in the draft, but for win-now teams looking for backups.

The New York Jets standout among the rest in this category. Of course, Aaron Rodgers was lost after just four snaps last season and in typical Jets’ fashion, there was no backup plan. The Pittsburgh Steelers also have a decision to make regarding the quarterback position.

First, there is a lower tier of players available that will be able to help teams in many ways.

Jacoby Brissett: Cleveland Browns

Gardner Minshew: New York Jets

Ryan Tannehill: Pittsburgh Steelers

Sam Darnold: Buffalo Bills

Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings

Kirk Cousins is the top quarterback available during this cycle. The Minnesota Vikings have to put their plan into action. The front office already came out and said that it is not interested in trading Justin Jefferson. If that is the case, then they might as well bring back the quarterback that Jefferson has played with since entering the league.

Of course, money is the issue but the cap can be manipulated in many ways to make this pairing work. Jefferson has said he wants to reset the market for receivers while Cousins is likely looking for one final payday before calling it a career. The good news is that Cousins will likely get a two-year deal, not a long-term commitment.

Cousins looks comfortable in Minnesota and has put up big numbers since signing there initially. It feels like a split would be wrong for both sides.

Justin Fields, Atlanta Falcons

Now it gets interesting. Justin Fields is not a free agent. The Chicago Bears hold the first-overall pick in the upcoming draft and will likely select Caleb Williams. This makes it interesting to see where Fields will end up.

To this point, the Atlanta Falcons have felt like the favorites. Whether it is Fields, Cousins, or another option entirely, Atlanta will be upgrading under center.

Fields would give the Falcons a dual-threat quarterback to pair with Bijan Robinson and Drake London. The skill positions are strong in Atlanta but the team has been unable to find a legitimate quarterback since Matt Ryan left. Fields would be able to show itself off for one year in Atlanta before a decision needs to be made about his long-term contract.

Russell Wilson, Las Vegas Raiders

Russell Wilson is another interesting option. Over the last three years, including his final season in Seattle, Wilson has been a shell of himself. The intriguing part of Wilson is that he is willing to sign for cheap with plenty of money coming his way elsewhere.

This is where the Las Vegas Raiders could take a flier. This is a team that has expressed interest in trading up to select a quarterback. That plan could be put on the back burner with Wilson coming to town.

The star power is in place. Davante Adams will remain on the outside and Josh Jacobs could very well re-sign. Antonio Pierce is officially the head coach, making it a desirable destination.

Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought in Baker Mayfield and he was able to completely reset his value. Mayfield threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns while leading the Bucs to the divisional round of the postseason.

Right now, the two sides seem far off on a deal because Mayfield’s demands have likely skyrocketed. This does not mean that a deal will not be agreed upon. Tampa Bay found something in Mayfield this season and it would be difficult to move on and find something better.
