Playoff Party: Cleveland Guardians Clinch Postseason Berth
Baseball pundits did not predict the Cleveland Guardians to win the AL Central Division this year.
When ace pitcher Shane Bieber suffered a season-ending injury in April, the team seemed destined for disappointment.
Nobody told that to the Guardians players and manager Stephen Vogt, who doused each other in champagne yesterday afternoon after clinching a spot in the postseason.
Cleveland walked off the Minnesota Twins for the second day in a row, capturing a 3-2 victory at Progressive Field.
SO MANY HEROES
Kyle Manzardo moved up to the No. 2 spot in the batting order and blasted a solo homer down the right-field line in the first inning.
Manzardo went 3-for-3 and is hitting .357 since returning from the minor leagues at the beginning of the month.
Minnesota took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a double by Manuel Margot and an error in center field by Lane Thomas.
Brayan Rocchio, who won the game on Wednesday night, tied this game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to score Josh Naylor.
Andres Gimenez drove in the game-winning run with a single in the 10th to score Jose Ramirez and start the party.
HOW ABOUT THAT BULLPEN?
Joey Cantillo pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up three hits. The bullpen pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed no hits!
That’s right. The Twins couldn’t touch Nick Sandlin, Tim Herrin, Andrew Walters, Hunter Gaddis, Emmanuel Clase, and Eli Morgan.
Herrin struck out all four batters he faced. Morgan is 3-0. Walters hasn’t given up a run in his five appearances.
Kansas City lost again, so Cleveland is up by 6½ games with eight to play.
The Guardians are just a half-game behind the New York Yankees for the top seed in the American League.
Cleveland will start its final road trip of the regular season against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ben Lively (12-9) will oppose the Cards’ Kyle Gibson (8-7) at 8:15 p.m.
