Players To Watch in Eagles vs. Ravens, Preseason Week 1

Preseason is finally here, and Eagles football is back! Well, kinda. The Philadelphia Eagles travel to Baltimore to take on the preseason powerhouse, the Baltimore Ravens. There are a ton of battles to watch for, but there are some players I’m just excited to see play football. So who should you keep an eye out for? Full disclaimer: I don’t think the starters will play, so you won’t see names like Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, or DeVonta Smith here.

Johnny Wilson

Johnny Wilson has gained a ton of hype over the past two weeks. As president and founder of the Johnny Wilson fan club, I welcome anyone and everyone to hop on the bandwagon. Wilson has a ton of momentum going forward in winning the WR3 job, and I think a great performance this week and next week in joint practices could give him the nod to start the season there. I don’t think it’ll be like in years past where there is one true WR3, but I do think Wilson could lead the way in snap count for the season.

Britain Covey

Let’s stay at WR for a second. I’m pumped that Britain Covey has a chance to get meaningful snaps on offense. As I’ve said in the past, I think Covey could be a solid piece for this offense if given the opportunity. Covey just fits that slot WR role: not crazy fast, but super quick and able to maneuver the middle of the field. So far in training camp, he’s been catching the eye of coaches and media personnel. I think this is the year we finally see more than a handful of snaps for Covey.

Trevor Keegan

I don’t think Keegan wins the RG spot coming out of training camp, but if Becton or Steen struggle this season, Keegan has a great chance to contribute. Keegan was the most storied OL prospect coming out of the draft, and while he has plenty to work on (pass blocking technique), I think his style of play is needed. He’s a nasty, physical blocker who looks for opposing players to block and doesn’t hesitate to finish blocks with force. His pedigree is impressive; he’s an award winner and a national champion. Look out for Keegan—he is someone I think Eagles fans will connect well with.

Any TE besides Dallas Goedert

I just want someone to show me something. Grant Calcaterra is the favorite to win the TE2 spot, but I want some type of competition for it. TE2 has been a weak spot for the Eagles in years past, and Calcaterra has a chance to show he can be a threat in the passing game. Out of the combination of C.J. Uzomah, Albert O, and E.J. Jenkins, I’d like someone to just show glimpses of potential.

Moro Ojomo

If you want to talk about a player’s stock rising, look no further than Moro Ojomo. Ojomo was someone who impressed me coming out of last year’s training camp. He ended the preseason with a head injury, but thankfully it wasn’t serious. Throughout last season, he saw some snaps here and there but finished with only 3 tackles. I think this year Ojomo has plenty of opportunities to be a key rotational piece on the defensive line. Look for Ojomo this Friday.

The Linebackers

Between Nakobe Dean, Devin White, Zack Baun, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who will emerge as the favorite? We may get an indication after Friday night’s game. So far in training camp, Dean is the only one whose stock has fallen. Baun has been receiving praise from the coaching staff, and Devin White has been getting hyped up as well. White is someone who is playing with a chip on his shoulder, and if he can get back to what he was, he may be the best LB we have had in years. Trotter is going to be a fan favorite; the first ax-man celebration after a sack will be a full-circle moment. Trotter has also been making plays in camp, and I think he’s a sneaky contender for the LB spot.

There are a lot of players I’m excited for, but combining training camp battles and the players themselves, these are the ones I’m looking forward to seeing. Let me know who you’re excited to see play in the comments below!
