The Panthers “disgusting act” overshadows first win at Duke since 1979
You might say the Panthers shocked the college basketball world on Saturday night when they went into Cameron Indoor Stadium and upset No. 7 Duke, 80-76.
It was Pitt’s first win in that venue since 1979.
Right after the horn sounded, Pitt senior forward, Blake Hinson, who scored 24 points and was a perfect seven of seven from three-point range, jumped up on the scorers table and began to taunt Duke’s famous (or infamous) student section.
Many of those students gave it back to Hinson by flipping him off (sometimes with both middle fingers). It was a classic college basketball moment, as visiting players and home fans displayed their passion and love for the game–while also displaying how passionately they hated one another.
I didn’t think much of it while watching it in real time. However, after a quick run through social media and the 24/7 news cycle, Hinson’s actions were upgraded to the most vile and disrespectful since the time Vikings receiver, Randy Moss, mimed mooning Packers fans at Lambeau Field after scoring a touchdown in a wildcard playoff game way back in 2005. (Evidently, Moss pretending he was mooning fans was more disgusting than Packers fans actually mooning visiting players as they arrived on the team bus.)
It was all anyone could talk about on Sunday. How could Hinson and some other Pitt players be so disrespectful to those innocent Duke students, who I’m sure did nothing all game but clap loudly in support of their favorite team? Surely, they didn’t say or scream mean and personal things to players. Surely, they used those two hours to build rapport with fellow students, as they unwound from a day of studying and exams.
Naturally, the takeaway from the 24/7 news cycle was that Duke would return the favor to the Oakland Zoo (Pitt’s semi-famous student section) the next time the two teams meet at Petersen Events Center. It’s too bad Pitt already played Duke at home on January 9, and it’s too bad the Blue Devil players couldn’t predict the future; otherwise, they may have really mocked the Zoo following their 75-53 victory.
That’s the real story, you know? Not the post-game taunting by Hinson. The Panthers went into Saturday night’s game with a 10-7 record–including a 1-5 mark in ACC play. Their season was unraveling rather quickly; last year’s magical run that saw them clinch their first trip to the NCAA tournament in seven years and win two games in the process seemed like ancient history.
Now, maybe the victory at Duke can jump-start the Panthers’ season and help them rally to the finish line.
If Hinson can keep producing the way he did on Saturday, maybe he and the Panthers can continue to shock the college basketball world and taunt some other student sections in the process. Heck, maybe he can mock the Duke student section one more time following a win in the ACC tournament in March.
