Paul Skenes To Start All-Star Game
Paul Skenes was drafted number one overall by the Pirates less than a year ago and has made just 11 starts in the Majors and he is already shattering MLB records left and right.
On Thursday afternoon, Paul Skenes tossed seven no-hit innings while striking out 11 in Pittsburgh’s 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Fifth-year Pirates manager Derek Shelton pulled Skenes after the 7th inning in favor of Colin Holderman who came on to pitch the 8th and instantly surrendered a single to Jake Baures.
Holderman and Aroldis Chapman pitched scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th respectively to secure the Pirates’ win but the storyline of this one was easily Paul Skenes.
Skenes lowed his season ERA to just 1.90 and raised his strikeout total to 89, the fifth-most through 11 starts in MLB history.
In the process, Skenes joined perhaps the greatest pitcher of all time in the record books.
Paul Skenes joined Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers ever to have two starts of six or more no-hit innings with at least 11 strikeouts in the same season.
With Thursday being Skenes’ last start until MLB’s All-Star Game on Tuesday night, it will align that the Pirates rookie sensation will have four days rest before the mid-summer classic.
Thursday morning on the Dan Patrick Show while Patrick was interviewing Skenes, NL All Star Manager Torey Lovullo called in to announce to Paul and the nation that he would be starting the mid-summer classic
“Paul Skenes has come on very quickly,” Lovullo said. “He’s been an unbelievable addition to Major League Baseball. He’s created a lot of interest. I’m going to be situationally aware of that when I’m making this decision.”
Skenes is now just the fifth rookie pitcher to start an All-Star Game. Skenes will tie Mark Fidrych (1976) for just the fewest starts (11) before starting an All-Star Game.
Starting Skenes will be a delight for baseball fans across the country and right now, it’s officially certain.
