Packers Currently Looking For Veteran Kicker
Green Bay Packers fans know all too well how important kicking is. They had the luxury of having Mason Crosby kick field goals for them for 16 seasons en route to becoming the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. However, the first year without him was bumpy. Rookie Anders Carlson missed a total of 11 kicks last season, including a key 43-yard attempt against the 49ers in Green Bay’s divisional round loss.
It appears as though the Packers aren’t being very patient with their second-year kicker. According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, Green Bay is in search of a veteran kicker to compete with Carlson ahead of the 2024 season.
This will certainly be an interesting development moving forward. Matt LaFleur’s team is ready to win right now. They have their elite quarterback in Jordan Love. They have their exciting, new defensive coordinator in Jeff Hafley. Also, they have their elite return man back in Keisean Nixon. A lot of significant pieces and players are in place for this team to go win a Super Bowl.
The only position that makes fans a little anxious is that kicking position. Teams with shaky special teams units don’t win the Super Bowl. That is a real certainty in the NFL. Notable free agent kickers on the market include a familiar face in Mason Crosby, Greg Joseph, and Randy Bullock. Perhaps GM Brian Gutekunst would be interested in bring in one of those names to compete with Carlson. At the very least, they could stay on the practice squad just in case they are needed. Time will tell to see how steady the Packers’ kicking game is as they move towards the 2024 season.
