Omar Khan’s Roster Moves Shine Despite WR Room Struggles

While it’s easy to express frustration toward Omar Khan regarding the lack of production in the wide receiver room, it’s important to recognize the impact he has made as general manager. Khan has built an impressive roster through savvy drafting, trades, and free agency signings. His moves have strengthened the Steelers on both sides of the ball, starting with acquisitions like Elandon Roberts, an outstanding run-stopping linebacker who adds physicality and a Super Bowl-winning mentality. Roberts is an iron man who elevates his play when it matters most. On the offensive line, Isaac Seumalo brings quiet leadership and the same championship pedigree, providing consistency and production while in the lineup.

Defensively, the Steelers have added playmakers like Patrick Queen, a young, versatile linebacker with sideline-to-sideline range. Although Queen hasn’t popped off the screen as many expected, he is becoming more comfortable and making more plays each week. Deshon Elliott may be the defense’s most surprising addition this offseason, consistently being in the right place during crucial moments. Elliott has been making plays for this defense since his week 1 interception. Along with Donte Jackson, who leads the team with three interceptions, they have helped the Steelers’ secondary is becoming a formidable unit. Cameron Johnston, a promising veteran punter, was off to a fantastic start before his season-ending injury, while Cordarrelle Patterson sparked the offense at both running back and receiver before being sidelined. His return will provide much-needed versatility.

Under center, Justin Fields has led the Steelers to a 4-2 record. He has improved his play since his time in Chicago, raising his floor, although his ceiling remains untapped. Fields will be battling with a now-healthy Russell Wilson, a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback who was also brought in as a low-risk, potential high-reward free agent. This competition could push both quarterbacks to elevate their game.

Khan’s recent drafts have also yielded promising results. Zach Frazier has been one of the top rookies of the 2024 class, stepping into the starting lineup and immediately becoming the Steelers’ best offensive lineman. Payton Wilson, another impactful rookie, has played significant snaps, has showcased his sideline-to-sideline abilities while growing more comfortable in the NFL. Meanwhile, Mason McCormick has emerged as a force on the offensive line, looking very promising after being thrust into the starting lineup due to injuries.

Second-year players like Broderick Jones, who is still developing consistency, and Joey Porter Jr., now the unquestioned CB1, continue to make strides. Porter quickly entered discussions among the top cornerbacks in the NFL, being tasked to cover the opposing teams WR1. Defensive lineman Keanu Benton has dominated the interior alongside veterans Cam Heyward and Larry Ogunjobi, while tight end Darnell Washington has excelled in his blocking duties and is becoming a receiving threat. Nick Herbig has proven to be a game-changer, making plays whenever he’s on the field. Despite missing his rookie season, Cory Trice showed promise this year before another injury sidelined him, but the Steelers are excited to get him back. Finally, Spencer Anderson has been a versatile asset drafted in the 7th round, capable of playing across the offensive line.

As the Steelers navigate the season, the efforts of Omar Khan and the talent he has brought to the roster cannot be overlooked. From the grit and determination of veterans to the promising potential of younger players, this team is positioned to grow and evolve as the season progresses. While the wide receiver room may still raise eyebrows, the depth and skill across the rest of the roster provide a strong foundation. With the trade deadline looming, there is time for the Steelers to make a move at receiver to improve their offensive capabilities. With continued improvement and resilience, the Steelers are looking to contenders in the competitive landscape of the NFL. I still believe the future looks bright, and the Black & Gold remain hopeful for what lies ahead.
