Imagining the Four Team College Football Playoff in 2024: Conference Championship Weekend

As a Georgia podcast, we’re thrilled that the Dawgs are likely in the 12 team regardless of what happens against Texas in the SEC Championship Game. This season has been the most chaotic since 2007, when a two-loss LSU team won the BCS National Championship. Since there is a ton of parody in college football in 2024, lets imagine if we were still in the four team CFP era and how it would look.

Locks

Oregon-Going into conference championship weekend, the only team that would be a lock to make the four-team playoff is Oregon. At 12-0 , the Ducks are the only remaining undefeated team in FBS. Even if they get blown out, it would be tough to imagine them getting left out.

SEC Champion- Texas enters the game with one loss and Georgia has two. While no team has made the four team CFP with two losses, this would’ve been the first year without a doubt weather it is an SEC team or from another conference. Bottom line for Texas and Georgia in this scenario, win and get in to the four team playoff.

Big Ten Champion– I mentioned earlier that Oregon would be in no matter the result this Saturday. If Penn State were to win against Oregon, they would definitely be in the four team playoff as B1G champions, along with Oregon. With that said, I don’t think anybody outside of Happy Valley would pick Penn State to actually beat an elite team under James Franklin .

Bubble Teams

ACC CHAMPION SMU- In the four team playoff, SMU winning the ACC would be the only way for the ACC to make the CFP. Should SMU beat Clemson, they would be a 12-1 conference champion from the third best conference in the country. Should Clemson win, they wouldn’t make the playoff since they have three losses.

Notre Dame- Because of the chaos that happened this season, normally a team that loses at home to Northern Illinois would be out immediately, but even if we were still in the four team playoff era Notre Dame would have a good argument to make it. 11-1 and they looked impressive in 10 of their 12 games this season.

Not a Chance

With multiple losses and/or a poor strength of schedule, the following teams would definitely be out of the 4 team CFP.

Loser of the SEC championship, Clemson, Alabama, South Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Arizona State, Boise State, UNLV, Ohio State, and Indiana.

Who would’ve thought that the 12 team playoff selection would have as much drama as the 4 team era?!?!?
