With the departure of Diggs, Bills in desperate need of a receiver

If you do not live under a rock you heard the news that Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs was traded to the Houston Texans. With his departure, the Bills are in desperate need of a receiver.

The current offensive roster regarding the receiving room is as follows:

  • Khalil Shakir
  • Curtis Samuel
  • Mack Hollins
  • Andy Isabella

Receivers who have not played:

  • Bryan Thompson
  • Justin Shorter
  • Tyrell Shavers
  • K.J. Hamler

Shakir’s production from a season ago was quite enjoyable to watch. He is not a number one wide receiver but definitely someone who can make plays as he finished his 2023 campaign with 49 receptions for 686 yards and four touchdowns (includes playoffs). He is the only remaining starting receiver on the roster with the departure of Gabriel Davis to the Jacksonville Jaguars and now Diggs to the Texans.

Curtis Samuel was acquired earlier in the offseason from the Washington Commanders and he brings a speed factor to the team. He finished his 2023 campaign with 62 receptions for 613 yards and 4 touchdowns. Samuel is also a dual threat, contributing on the ground with 39 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Mack Hollins has been around the league on multiple teams since he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Hollins never lived up to his full potential but is a solid blocker and will take the role that Davis had for the last several seasons. His 6’4″ body frame will make him a solid redzone threat and he has experience in the league as he has been with five teams in eight seasons.

Andy Isabella played in just two games since joining the Bills in 2023, but he may have a bigger role if the organization does not address the huge gap in the receiving room. He has a career 33 receptions for 447 yards and three touchdowns and has not caught a pass since the 2022 season when he was with the Cardinals.

Even though the wide receiver room looks quite bleak at the moment, the good news is just how full the 2024 NFL Draft is with quality wide receivers. Expect the Bills to target a receiver in one of the rounds as the team is looking for a day one contributor to take the role of Diggs.

This is not an overnight fix but adding Samuel in the offseason along with Hollins provides the team with two veteran players. Now it is time for general manager Brandon Beane to focus on the draft and select a receiver with one of their 11 picks. There are many solid day one contributors and there is no need to add yet another veteran or trade away any more draft picks to acquire one.

In the first round, simply select the best player available. There’s no need to draft up to select a wide receiver, and then in the later rounds you can get your playmaker to fill the void that Diggs left.
