Why The Packers Don’t Have More Super Bowls
The Green Bay Packers have the most regular season wins in NFL history. They have the most championships in history, along with the most MVPs too. They are arguably the most storied franchise in the NFL. However, they have only won one Super Bowl in the last 27 years. That feels weird considering how dominant they have been in the regular season.
This team has won 12 division championships over the last two decades, and they’ve made six conference championship games over the last decade-and-a-half. They’ve had legendary quarterbacks and franchise legends walk through their doors consistently for a long, long time. But, they’ve only been able to climb the mountain top once. Why is that?
Poor Defense
Remember when Colin Kaepernick carved up Green Bay’s defense in both the 2013 and 2014 postseason? Remember when Eli Manning went into Lambeau and put up 37 points on a 15-1 Green Bay defense with Clay Matthews, Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, and other great players? Raheem Mostert is definitely still running too. How about 4th-and-26 in Philadelphia?
The point is that as great as Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre were in Green Bay, even they weren’t great enough to overcome poor defense in the postseason. If the Packers had properly coached the defense and just played better, they’d have more than one Super Bowl. That’s at least one reason.
Unwillingness To Use Free Agency
Mainly during the Ted Thompson era, the Packers didn’t do very much to add experienced players in free agency. Yes, they were able to get Charles Woodson. Yes, they added an aging Julius Peppers and Jimmy Graham. But, they were never able to add a player to take them over the top when it mattered most.
Even with Brian Gutekunst taking over as GM, that still seems to be a question. In 2021, they had an opportunity to get veteran receiver Odell Beckham Jr. They decided not to pay up for him, and the Rams got him for the stretch run. They would go on to win the Super Bowl and Green Bay would lose in the divisional round. That’s not a coincidence.
Special Teams
The 2015 NFC Championship Game. Seattle. An onside kick happened. That’s all that needs to be said. The 2022 postseason. San Francisco was in town. A blocked punt happened. Too much has already been said. Packers fans should just exit the article.
The point is that in two critical playoff games for two very good Packers teams, their special teams failed them in the biggest moment. Aaron Rodgers deserved a lot better in the latter half of his time in Green Bay. If the Packers do what they are supposed to do in those moments, the franchise and Rodgers doesn’t have just one ring.
