What Will Green Bay’s Starting Secondary Look Like in 2024?

The Green Bay Packers almost have their entire secondary figured out for the upcoming season. All they are missing is another starting safety to pair with free agent signee Xavier McKinney, who signed a four-year $68 million deal this offseason with Green Bay. The team also re-signed the likes of significant contributors in slot cornerback Keisean Nixon and cornerback Corey Ballentine.

With Green Bay’s entire secondary almost complete, it is time to take a look at what the starting secondary will look like come September. That will be new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley‘s bread and butter.

CB1 – Jaire Alexander

There aren’t many shutdown cornerbacks like Alexander. After being drafted out of Louisville in the first round back in 2018, he has shined in Green Bay. The two-time All-Pro has recorded 63 pass deflections and 13 career interceptions over his six seasons with the Packers. Hafley, who has coached the likes of Darrelle Revis, Richard Sherman, and Ronde Barber, will look to him to be the leader.

CB2 – Carrington Valentine

The seventh-round rookie out of Kentucky was forced to step in and start 12 games last season due to the injury problems with teammate Eric Stokes. Valentine was more than able to hold his own. He allowed just 57.6% of passes from opposing quarterbacks to be completed his way. He also had nine pass deflections. His experience down the stretch last season is why he will be starting opposite of Alexander when the 2024 season begins.

Slot Cornerback – Keisean Nixon

After re-signing with the Packers on a three-year deal, the All-Pro return man is back defending the slot in Green Bay. His versatility and speed has allowed him to make an impact all over the secondary. Defensively last season, the former Raider blew away his old career marks as he recorded 80 total tackles, six pass deflections, and an interception off of Patrick Mahomes that would help rally Green Bay down the stretch. Hafley will be able to do so many things with Nixon. Don’t doubt that.

Free Safety – Xavier McKinney

After losing the likes of Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and presumably Rudy Ford in free agency, Green Bay made the move to bring in the ascending 24-year-old safety from the Giants. The former national champion was an elite cover safety after deflecting 11 passes, catch three interceptions, and totaling a career-best 116 tackles. It is mind-boggling that the former Alabama star is just 24. He should be making plays in Green Bay for a long, long time.

Strong Safety – Unknown

It is hard to say what Green Bay will do opposite of McKinney. They could go out and add another veteran like former Packer Micah Hyde. Or, they could look to the draft where there are plenty of intriguing prospects, including Tyler Nubin. Regardless, Green Bay will have a plan moving forward. They always do. So, Packers fans can take a breather.
