What the Hiring of Rees Says to Cleveland Browns Fans
On the afternoon of January 14th the news leaked that the Cleveland Browns promoted their tight ends coach / passing game coordinator Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator. He will replace the recently fired Ken Dorsey. Both Dorsey and offensive line coach Andy Dickerson were promptly fired at the conclusion of the disappointing 2024 season. Rees was considered a top candidate for the job and was rumored to be sought by newly hired Mike Vrabel in New England. Rees served as offensive coordinator at the University of Alabama under legendary head coach Nick Saban. Coach Saban has given Tommy Rees glowing reviews since then. With this hiring and recent hiring of a new offensive line coach, there is a bigger picture in play for the Cleveland Browns and their fans.
These hirings show that the era of Deshaun Watson as the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback for all intents and purposes is over and done. The team has already started to move on from this mess. The retaining of Stefanski and Berry says that the Watson trade was more of a Jimmy Haslam move than Berry or Stefanski. How can the owner fire his people when he forced them to fit a square peg in round hole? The answer is that he couldn’t fire them. The trade and contract for Watson was a mistake regardless of who wanted it to happen. This shows that the team has plan to move on from that mistake. What else can Browns fans expect this offseason?
Browns fans can expect a completely revamped quarterback room. A veteran bridge quarterback will be signed for the short term. Jacoby Brissett and or Kirk Cousins would be most likely to happen for this team. I would also expect the team draft a quarterback in April. However, I don’t see the team investing a high draft pick on quarterback this draft. I can see a second or third round pick being used on a quarterback. But the point is that the team is already moving on from Deshaun Watson, Browns fans and the Cleveland sports media should move on too.
