What if the Packers got crazy and signed Matt Ryan?
The likelihood of the Green Bay Packers actually signing Matt Ryan to be a their backup signal-caller is very, very low. Now an analyst for CBS, it appears as though the former NFL MVP’s time playing is over. But, it is always fun to play the hypothetical game.
The Green Bay Packers have a couple of backup quarterbacks behind franchise quarterback Jordan Love. One in is soon-to-be second-year quarterback Sean Clifford. The other is practice squad quarterback and journeyman Alex McGough. Green Bay doesn’t need a backup quarterback. That is definitely a fair statement. But wouldn’t they benefit from having an older mind in the room that won an MVP with Matt LaFleur as his coach?
Matt Ryan Could be a Player-Coach
People tend to forget that when Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, and the Falcons were going crazy for a few years under Dan Quinn, Matt LaFleur was the team’s QBs coach. He was hugely responsible for helping Matt Ryan become an MVP and guiding Atlanta’s offense in 2016 to one of the most productive seasons on record.
So, what if Green Bay signed Ryan to be a backup just to help guide Jordan Love even more? Yes, Love seems to be an elite player already. He finished second in the league in touchdown passes with 32 as a first-year starter in 2023. But a little more brain power in the room couldn’t hurt. After all, the Packers are running a very similar offense to the one that was run down in Atlanta with Ryan, Kyle Shanahan, and LaFleur.
No, Matt Ryan wouldn’t be a starter. No, he wouldn’t get paid a ton of money. But, he doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring. Why not come to Green Bay to help the quarterback and offense out? Why not help out his old coach in LaFleur? If the Packers felt like they needed some more experience in the QBs room, why not give Ryan a one-year deal? Only a few quarterbacks can play 15 years in the NFL. Green Bay should take advantage of what Ryan has seen in his great career. Give him a chance to get his ring while also being a very helpful mind for the rest of the offense.
