Welsh Rugby Star Visiting Packers
The Green Bay Packers are apparently still looking to add new players prior to the NFL Draft. One of those players might be coming from across the pond.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Welsh rugby star Louis-Rees Zammit is looking to make it to the NFL. He has the Packers on his list of visits for this week, as well was the Chiefs, Broncos, Browns, and Jets. He will meet with them Thursday. Zammit, 23, last played Wing and Right Back for Gloucester in the English Premiership.
It will be interesting to see if Green Bay indeed sees some potential in Zammit. He stands at 6-3 and weighs close to 200 pounds. Could he be a defensive back? Maybe he could play linebacker if he puts on a few more pounds? It is hard to tell when a player, especially a rugby player, comes over from Europe or another country where American football isn’t popular. But, Green Bay could always add him to the practice squad as a developmental player. The fact that he is a professional rugby player means he is physical and has experience getting guys on the ground, as well as carrying the ball.
Again, according to RugbyPass, this probably isn’t the move Green Bay fans were looking for. After all, they still have actual starting needs at safety, linebacker, and they need another running back for the future. According to Over The Cap, Green Bay still has over $22 million in cap space. They also have 11 total draft picks in April’s draft, including five top-100 picks.
Even though Zammit might not be the possible addition that Packers fans are looking for, they will have plenty of opportunities to add more impactful players to their Super Bowl-ready team over the next month.
