The Packers need to leap at Justin Simmons

In another shocking move, the Denver Broncos have cut eight-year veteran and All-Pro safety Justin Simmons. This comes after the team recently cut ties with signal-caller Russell Wilson. But Simmons joins a list of great free agent safeties that includes Jordan Poyer, Quandre Diggs, Kevin Byard, and others. This is where the Green Bay Packers need to step in.

With safeties Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford all hitting free agency, the Packers have a big-time need at that position. Adding Simmons after bringing in an exciting, new defensive coordinator in Jeff Hafley would be a wise move for Green Bay. Here is why:

Simmons is Elite

Justin Simmons is one of the best defensive players in football. The four-time All-Pro has more interceptions than anybody since entering the league in 2016 (30). He has six career seasons with 50 or more solo tackles too. This is one of the most productive, complete defensive backs in football. Despite the Denver Broncos struggling to find a quarterback and a consistent winning culture since Peyton Manning left, Justin Simmons certainly did his part in Denver.

Still just 30 years of age, he is a real weapon and still in his prime. The Packers are desperate for a superstar safety. Why not bring Simmons aboard?

Why Green Bay Makes Sense

First off, an interesting little nugget is that new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley coached at Boston College for the last four seasons. Although he didn’t coach coach Simmons while he was at BC, that connection could be a vital one. Also, the Packers haven’t had an All-Pro type of safety come through the doors since the likes of Nick Collins and Charles Woodson. Justin Simmons is that type of dude.

If Green Bay offered Simmons a three-year deal that works financially for both, why not make it happen? Simmons hasn’t been a part of a winning culture yet. That’s all Green Bay is. If he joins a defense with Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary, Quay Walker, Jaire Alexander, and others, Green Bay will be in business. This would be a match made in Football Heaven.
