The Grass is Greener Where You Water It
Last Sunday the Cleveland Browns lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium 27-13. The loss slips the Browns 2024 record to 3-10 and eliminates them from the NFL playoffs. Just 11 and ½ months ago this same team won 11 games and made the playoffs as the 5th AFC playoff seed. But that was last year, and this is this year. For the 21st time in the 25 years of the expansion era of the Cleveland Browns the team will have a losing season and miss the playoffs. It has been a rough road for Browns fans. But to solve the problem we need to correctly identify it and figure out why this happened.
Recently Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslem told an ESPN reporter that he believes that he has the right people in place to turn around the organization. He publicly endorsed gm Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski. This group has been running the Browns since 2020. They have two of those four winning seasons along with the 2 playoff seasons. They also have a playoff win in Pittsburgh. Now this doesn’t mean that they didn’t make mistakes. We all make mistakes and one of the mistakes they made cost $230 million dollars and 3 first round draft picks. Because of that mistake with offensive line injuries the team started at 1-6 and the season was effectively lost. We can only hold Stefanski and Berry responsible for the last 5 years of the Browns. This is because that is who oversaw the team. Many times, Browns fans think that it’s better in other NFL cities or where their rival resides.
Browns fans think that in Pittsburgh they always had it easy, but that is not the case. From 1933-1972 the Steelers only had one playoff season, with no playoff wins, and 0 points scored in the playoffs. Things didn’t turn around for them until Chuck Knoll took over the team in 1969. It also took time for Knoll and the Steelers to win consistently. And from 1946-1964 the Cleveland Browns won 8 world championships. My point being is that if we as Browns fans want to see this turn for the better, we need to change our attitude to fix our altitude. We are not losers and we never have been. The Cleveland Browns arguably have the most loyal fans in sports. Eight world championships, 18 hall of famers, and the only fan base to fight to keep a team and win in all of sports. I would put that track record up against any fanbase in any sports city. Like the old saying goes the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Browns fans let’s water the grass we have instead of urinating on it.
