Kevin Stefanski is calling the plays and that is fine, here’s why

On the first day of the 2024 Cleveland Browns training camp at the Greenbrier in West Virginia. Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski held his first post practice press conference. At the start of the presser the two-time NFL coach of the year ended all speculation on who would be calling the offensive plays for the Cleveland Browns in 2024.

Coach Kevin Stefanski will be calling the offensive plays for the Cleveland Browns this season. He said this right away after the teams first practice. The reason he did this was to avoid any distractions or controversies for this team. The Cleveland Browns truly feel that this team’s Super Bowl window of opportunity is 2024 and 2025. After that is still up in the air and depends on how quarterback Deshaun Watson plays. Both general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski know this. And the last thing this team needs is a distraction. And a trivial distraction is even more counterproductive.

Offensive play calling is a great subject for fans to call in on sports talk shows. But it is not as important as fans may think. What is more important is the offensive game plan and strategy. What plays and personnel packages are on the play call sheet is what is important. And if a play doesn’t work, it could be for many reasons besides the play call itself. In other words, this is not a video game. And NFL play calling shouldn’t be regarded as such.

Since 2020, Kevin Stefanski has won two NFL Coach of the year awards. He has an overall winning record, two playoff appearances, and a playoff win.  He has a track record of success in the NFL. I believe Browns fans can give him some credit and the benefit of the doubt. The offensive play calling will be good this year. This is because it has been good every year under Stefanski. And that is why him calling the plays will be fine.
