PFF Ranks Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Line as Best in 2024
Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently came out with their 2024 Awards in which they pick the top players from certain positions along with other important factors such as the top offensive line. Over the year’s PFF has grown to become a company that helps NFL and college franchises with analytics. There have been several PFF employees who have gone on to secure top jobs with NFL and college teams.
While many individuals have mixed opinions regarding PFF and how they grade players, the work they do on a daily basis is very professional and displays a hard working mentality. Just the other day, NFL Contributor and Senior Analyst for PFF, Zoltan Buday, published an article titled: “PFF Awards 2024: Philadelphia Eagles win Best Offensive Line”. Buday mentions many statistical reasons why the Eagles won in this category.
The article mentions how the loss of long-time and future Hall of Fame center Jason Kelce posed many questions in the offseason on how the offensive line would perform in 2024. Kelce’s departure ended up not being a major factor as the organization produced a 2,000-yard runner in Saquon Barkley along with the continued success of the “Tush Push” with quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Buday spoke highly of the Eagles’ two offensive tackles, mentioning how both of these athletes are the best at their respective positions in the entire NFL. He specifically said,
Both members of arguably the best offensive tackle duo in the NFL — Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson — missed time due to injuries early in the season, and left guard Landon Dickerson got off to a rough start. Dickerson gave up 19 pressures over the first seven weeks, which was tied for the sixth most among guards. He surrendered pressure on 9.0% of pass plays — the second-worst rate at the position. However, the Alabama product surrendered only eight pressures over his last 10 regular-season outings.
Mailata and Johnson, when healthy, give the Eagles the best chance to produce each week. Landon Dickerson struggled at times but has settled in nicely toward the end of the regular season.
The question of whether or not the Eagles deserve this award is not up for debate, in my honest opinion. When an offensive line produces a 2,000-yard rusher and accounts for another 630-yards from the franchise quarterback, there is no debate. Barkley and Hurts’ rushing abilities propel this offense to greater heights. When Hurts was injured during the Washington Commanders game, backup quarterback Kenny Pickett could not compete at the highest level possible due to his inability to utilize his legs.
Offensive linemen enjoy quarterbacks who have a dual-threat ability. Why? These athletes can get out of trouble more by escaping the pocket and not enduring as many sacks as a traditional pocket passer.
The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles being named the top offensive line this NFL season is accurate and warranted due to the success from two players on their offense. Two players who are the face of the franchise for many years to come and are less productive without the five men up front leading the way.
