Packers Re-Sign Corey Ballentine
More cornerback help is on the way for former NFL defensive backs coach and new Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Along with the re-signing of tight end Tyler Davis, Green Bay announced the re-signing of veteran cornerback Corey Ballentine. This move came Tuesday, along with the Packers bringing back another cornerback in Keisean Nixon on a three-year deal, as well as signing free agent safety Xavier McKinney to a four-year deal.
Ballentine, 27, had his best season in 2023. The soon-to-be six-year veteran, who has had stops with the Giants, Jets, and Lions, started a career-best six games last season. This came after the Rasul Douglas trade to the Bills and veteran corner Eric Stokes was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Additionally, Ballentine recorded a career-high 43 tackles, seven pass deflections, and an opponents’ completion percentage of 56.3%. The former 2019 sixth-round pick out of Washburn University (Div. II) also has 646 career snaps on special teams (Pro Football Reference), which is why special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia should be happy to have him back too.
With Ballentine back in the fold, Green Bay now has plenty of cornerback depth. Led by All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander, this Packers pass defense, which ended the season on a hot streak, should take another step in 2024 with the assistance and expertise of Jeff Hafley and some more safety help. Green Bay is now looking for one more safety to pair with McKinney. That move could come during this free agency period or in next month’s NFL Draft.
