Packers Lose Jonathan Owens to Rival Bears

The Green Bay Packers now must look for another starting safety. Despite the addition of Xavier McKinney on a four-year deal, Green Bay loses its former safety in Jonathan Owens to the Chicago Bears. The Packers will now see the 28-year-old twice next season after he inked a two-year deal with their arch-rivals Tuesday.

After signing a one-year deal with Green Bay prior to the 2023 season, Owens would go onto have a career year. His 65.6% completion percentage allowed to opponents was the best of his five-year career. The former Texan also set career marks in pressures and average yards per completion.

He, along with former Green Bay teammate Darnell Savage, are the only two defenders, and safeties for that matter, to sign with other teams. Savage signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this week. They join former Packers offensive players Aaron Jones and Jon Runyan Jr. as other Green Bay players to leave for new teams in free agency.

In terms of the safety position, the only safeties currently on the roster are McKinney, Anthony Johnson Jr., Tyler Coyle, and Zayne Anderson. McKinney is the only established and important piece among that group. In other words, they need another big piece. They could re-sign free agent safety Rudy Ford, but it seems like new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley may want to start fresh at that position. Keep in mind that free agents like Micah Hyde, Kamren Curl, Quandre Diggs, Rayshawn Jenkins, Jordan Fuller, and Jamal Adams are all quality safeties that are still available.
