Packers Lose Another Free Agent To Jacksonville
Two of the Green Bay Packers’ free agents have now signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason. First, they lost a five-year starter and impact player in safety Darnell Savage, who joined Jacksonville on a new three-year deal. Now, they have lost four-year backup tight end and blocker Josiah Deguara, who signed with the Jaguars on a one-year deal.
Deguara was more of a role player than a big-time, play-making pass-catcher. In his first four NFL seasons with Green Bay after getting drafted in the third round back in 2020, the former Cincinnati Bearcat recorded 47 receptions for 436 yards and two touchdowns. His best season came in 2021 when he caught 25 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a role on special teams as an extra protector and rusher (559 career special teams snaps).
While in Green Bay early on, he played with the likes of veterans Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan. Then, he played behind talented rookies Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft in 2023. The ascension of Musgrave and Kraft is one of the reasons why Green Bay most likely didn’t feel the need to bring him back. They also re-signed backup tight end and key blocker Tyler Davis.
Look for Deguara to have more a run-blocking role in Jacksonville under Doug Pederson. Remember, Jacksonville already has a great receiving tight end in two-time Pro-Bowler Evan Engram, who caught a whopping 114 passes on 143 targets a season ago. Also, Deguara can add Trevor Lawrence to the list of great quarterbacks that he will have played with in his young career.
