Packers GM Excited To Have Keisean Nixon Back

The Packers did what they needed to do when it came to free agent defender and special-teamer Keisean Nixon. Green Bay re-signed him to a three-year deal. At the annual league meetings down in Orlando this week, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst was asked about the re-signing of the two-time First-Team All-Pro kick returner and starting slot corner. Here is what Gutekunst had to say:

“We’re excited about what (Nixon) can do for our defense. I think bringing in Jeff Hafley and give him some time to really study Keisean and make sure that that was a fit was important,” Gutekunst said. “He’s very excited to have him back as well.”

Gutekunst also added in that he feels great about the stability that Nixon brings to the slot cornerback position.

Not only is the former Raider the best kick returner in the league seeing as he has led the league in kick return yardage each of the last two seasons, but he is one of the most versatile players in the league. He can play in the slot and on the boundary. The 2023 season was the best year of his career from a defensive perspective. He set career-highs in starts (13), tackles (80), pass deflections (6), and he recorded his first career half-sack in the playoffs against Dallas.

New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is going to do some special things with the defensive back talent that he has in the fold. Remember, Hafley has coached the likes of great cornerbacks like Darrelle Revis, Richard Sherman, Ronde Barber, and Joe Haden in his career. He also coached the No. 1 defense in the country at Ohio State in 2019.

With a talented and speedy defender that can play multiple positions on the backend, plus an All-Pro cornerback on the boundary in Jaire Alexander, Hafley and the Packers will be a dangerous pass defense in 2024.
