Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Attends Wisconsin Pro Day

Scouting never stops in Green Bay, Wisconsin. That is especially true during draft season. Packers GM Brian Gutekunst took a trip down to Madison on Friday to get a close-up look at some possible draft targets. Maybe the most intriguing Wisconsin draft prospect, especially from Green Bay’s perspective, is running back Braelon Allen.

The Packers should be looking for a running back when the draft rolls around. This is the case because they have made some major moves at the position during this free agency period. They shockingly released Pro Bowl back Aaron Jones, who signed with the rival Vikings. However, they answered that loss with the major signing of All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs. Green Bay also decided to bring back bruising running back A.J. Dillon on a one-year deal. A lot of fans expected Dillon to be gone, but he and Green Bay were able to find common ground.

But again, the Packers should be looking to add a running back like Allen in one of the first few rounds. He was one of the best running backs in the country over the fast few years. The three-time All-Big Ten performer rushed for over 1,200 yards in two of his three years starting and recorded at least 1,100 scrimmage yards each season. He also scored a whopping 35 touchdowns over the last three seasons. If it wasn’t for Blake Corum at Michigan, Allen would’ve be considered far and away the best running back in the conference. That is for certain.

So, perhaps the Packers could target Allen later in the draft. Then, he could replace Dillon after next season as the running mate alongside Josh Jacobs if Dillon leaves in free agency. Give Allen a year to learn and grow in the NFL before taking on some big-time responsibilities as an impactful player for the Packers. But this could be the case with any running back that Green Bay decides to select.

Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see if Allen is indeed the running back they that they choose to zero in on come next month.
