Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Addresses The Josh Jacobs Signing
The Packers have made some major moves this offseason, especially in the running back room. Despite having to cut ties with franchise legend Aaron Jones, the team was able to sign All-Pro back Josh Jacobs to a four-year deal.
At the annual league meetings in Orlando, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst finally got to speak with the media for the first time since the Combine. He was asked about the Josh Jacobs signing and what he likes most about him. Here is what he had to say (via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman):
“He’s a very proven back. He runs with a lot of violence, explosiveness. He’s a bigger back, a durable back for the most part. He’s really a guy that can flourish in all phases, as a runner, as a blocker and certainly as a pass-catcher.”
Aaron Jones was a fantastic player in Green Bay for seven seasons. He ranks top-five in a lot of major rushing categories in franchise history. But, Josh Jacobs might be even better. He is younger and a more productive runner. Despite joining the league two years later than Jones, Jacobs is less than 400 yards shy of Jones’s career rushing total.
He has three career 1,000-yard rushing seasons, and he eclipsed over 1,100 scrimmage yards in each of his five seasons with the Raiders. The two-time Pro-Bowler is also a healthier player. He has missed 13 games in five seasons. Jones missed six games just last season alone.
It is very difficult for any team when they lose one of their offensive stars and fan-favorites. But if that is going to be the case, they need to have a backup plan. Gutekunst and the Packers seemingly had a great one.
