Packers Draft Targets: Tyler Nubin
Yes, the Packers made the exciting move to sign free agent safety Xavier McKinney to a four-year deal earlier this offseason. However, they have presumably lost three other impact safeties during the free agency period of the offseason. Darnell Savage, after starting for five seasons in Green Bay, joined the Jacksonville Jaguars on a three-year deal. Jonathan Owens joined the rival Bears on a two-year deal. Also, Rudy Ford is still a free agent. So, the Packers need to add at least one more safety.
This is where Minnesota’s Tyler Nubin could come into play. A talented safety prospect that has been connected to Green Bay in the pre-draft process.
A Productive Player At Minnesota
The Illinois native became an All-Big Ten performer and an All-American while in the Twin Cities. He recorded a career-high five interceptions in 2023, as well as four pass deflections. The 6-2, 210-pound safety was already a quality tackler (204 career tackles at Minnesota). But his pass coverage skills greatly improved in his final season while playing for head coach P.J. Fleck. Despite testing poorly at Minnesota’s Pro Day, his instincts and discipline make him a starting-caliber safety. Whether it’s in run support or while the ball is in the air, Nubin has the potential to impact the game at a high level and be a really good NFL player.
When Could Green Bay Select Him?
Nubin is not going to make it past the third round. He is too talented of a player. For the Packers, it’s going to come down to what position is most important for them. They need offensive line depth. They need another linebacker too. Also, they could use a long-term running back.
Green Bay has five top-100 draft picks. Look for them to zero in on Nubin, if they so choose, at either pick No. 25, pick No. 41, or Pick No. 58. Pairing him with Xavier McKinney on the backend would be an awesome match for defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Both are under 25 years of age and both would be in Green Bay for the foreseeable future.
