Packers Draft Targets: CB/PR Cooper DeJean

It never hurts to bring in some versatility in the NFL, especially in the defensive backfield. Iowa hybrid defender and punt returner Cooper DeJean is one of the most talented prospects in this year’s draft class. Plenty of folks believe DeJean makes sense for Green Bay in the first round of the draft at pick No. 25. What specifically does he do so well that would make Packers GM Brian Gutekunst want to bring him to Lombardi Avenue?

Elite Playmaking Ability

Starting on the defensive side, DeJean was a true standout at Iowa. After becoming a starter as a sophomore in 2022, he would play multiple positions. He played cornerback and then a hybrid safety/linebacker role. The All-Big Ten performer recorded 75 total tackles in 2022, eight pass deflections, and five interceptions. He was all over the place.

In 2023, DeJean’s impact was felt on both defense and special teams. He recorded multiple interceptions and had a punt return average of 11.5 yards. If it wasn’t for a disallowed punt return touchdown vs Minnesota, DeJean would’ve had multiple return touchdowns in 2023. He is the definition of a playmaker in multiple facets.

How He’d Fit In Green Bay

DeJean had a production score of 87 at the NFL Combine, which was second among cornerbacks. He’s not just a cornerback, though. He could be a strong safety at the next level too. His tough frame (6-0, 203 pounds) allows him to be physical anywhere. Imagine what DeJean could do in Jeff Hafley‘s new defensive scheme if paired up with ascending coverage safety Xavier McKinney. He could come down and fill the hole or step back shut receivers down. He is that versatile.

Also, his punt return skills could prove useful. Maybe Rich Bisaccia could cook up some interesting set plays for him and All-Pro return man Keisean Nixon. He would be a fantastic asset there too.

If the Packers want to have some fun next year, bringing in DeJean would be wise. Having a player like him, along with Nixon, speedy receiver Jayden Reed, and other uniquely-skilled players could make Green Bay even more of a juggernaut.
