Packers Draft Targets: Audric Estime

It is no secret that GM Brian Gutekunst has been making moves when it comes to the Packers’ running back room this offseason.

They made the surprising move to cut franchise legend Aaron Jones after both sides couldn’t agree on a significant pay cut. To combat the loss of Jones, Green Bay signed All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs, who has recorded 1,100 scrimmage yards in each of his five NFL seasons (all with Raiders). Additionally, they decided to re-sign free agent bruiser A.J. Dillon to a one-year deal.

Despite re-signing Dillon, he doesn’t appear to be in Green Bay’s long-term plans at the position. So, the Packers may be looking to add a running back in the draft. Could Notre Dame’s Audric Estime be one of their targets?

A Growing Player

At Notre Dame, Estime wasn’t an elite player right away. He steadily grew from his freshman year to his junior year. He went from 60 rushing yards as a freshman, to 920 as a sophomore, to 1,341 as a junior. The New York native also poured in a career-high 18 rushing touchdowns last season. He had no fumbles in college and averaged almost 7.0 yards per carry during his Notre Dame career. Simply put, he is one of the best offensive players in the draft.

What He Could Do In Green Bay

Estime is a big running back. He stands at 5-11 and weighs close to 230 pounds. Despite being that big, he has 4.5 speed too. Not only will he run defenders over, but he can also fly by them. As a bigger back, he can learn from Jacobs and Dillon in year one if drafted by Green Bay in round two or three. Then, if the Packers move on from Dillon after his one-year deal, Estime can slide into that No. 2 role behind Jacobs.

With his productivity as a runner, he would be very hard to pass up. He would play very sparingly as a rookie because of the depth at running back. But, in terms Green Bay’s long-term view, he could be a great player in a great offense on Lombardi Avenue.
