Packers Draft Target: Cam Hart

The Packers already have some depth at the cornerback position. All-Pro corner Jaire Alexander is the shutdown man on the boundary. Slot corner Keisean Nixon was re-signed to a three-year deal this offseason. Eric Stokes Jr., Carrington Valentine, and Corey Ballentine are the other important contributors in that position group too.

With the arrival of new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who coached the likes of Darrelle Revis, Richard Sherman, and Ronde Barber at different stops as a defensive backs coach in both college and the NFL, don’t count out the Packers drafting a cornerback in April’s draft.

Perhaps a cornerback like Notre Dame’s Cam Hart could be a solid defender on the boundary for Green Bay. Here is why he could fit in Green Bay:

Big And Athletic

Hart is one of the most physically gifted defensive backs in the draft. He stands at 6-3 and weighs just over 200 pounds. Imagine Hafley being able to work with a cornerback that big. He could match up against some of the league’s tallest wide receivers. He has modest 4.5 speed and a near-40-inch vertical. His anticipation and physicality at the line of scrimmage are also bonus points.

While at Notre Dame, Hart had 15 pass deflections over his final three seasons. He also recorded close to 60 solo tackles over that same span. The Maryland native is one of the best defenders in this draft. Period.

Where He’d Fit In Green Bay

Hart would be more of a role player in year one. He would play less than 50% of the snaps defensively due to the depth that the team already has. Special teams would be where he sees the most action as a rookie. But, he would be a long-term piece of this defense moving forward. His experience starting 32 games over his final three seasons has prepared him for life in the NFL. Hafley could coach him and have him ready to be an NFL starter the following season.
