NFL Power Rankings, Week 4: Record-Based Pecking Order
The NFL is only four weeks in, and there are only two undefeated teams left standing. The league’s designs toward parity have never been more apparent, and that should mean an absolutely crazy 2024 NFL Season.
For this week’s Power Rankings, we’ll rank each team by their record as we head into Week 5. So, even though the Ravens (2-2) are probably better than all but one or two the teams sitting at 3-1, that doesn’t count for this exercise.
Let’s dive in!
The Unbeatens (4-0)
1. Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings are playing the best as a team in the league with explosive, consistent offense and ferocious defense.
2. Kansas City Chiefs
KC has the most clutch QB and arguably the most clutch Defense in football, but injuries are starting to take their toll.
One-Loss Wonders (3-1)
1. Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen is my MVP of the league so far, despite the ugly loss to Baltimore. The Bills will go as far as Allen can carry them.
2. Detroit Lions
When this offense is clicking, it’s the most unbelievably well-oiled machine in football, and it’s incredibly fun to watch.
4. Houston Texans
Houston is tough to figure out this year, but I trust CJ Stroud and DeMeco Ryans to eventually get the offense and defense respectively to start making things look easier as the year progresses
3. Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith and Kenneth Walker are leading an aggressive offense that compliments Mike MacDonald’s defense well. They’re one of the best teams in football.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers
Ironically, I feel better about the Steelers chances to be a real contender in January after their 1st loss of the year than at any point during their season-opening 3-game win streak. If Justin Fields can play like that regularly, this team will win a lot of games.
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2 after TNF)
Baker Mayfield is a little streaky, but when he’s on his game, he plays like one of the best QBs in football, and it makes the Bucs the most dangerous team in the NFC South.
7. Washington Commanders
Speaking of the best QBs in football, Rookie Jayden Daniels might already be there. He’s operating OC Kliff Kingsbury’s offense to perfection and is super smart as a runner and a passer.
The Middle Class (2-2)
1. Baltimore Ravens
Despite their record, the Ravens are still one of the best teams in the league when they play their game. Their steamrolling of Buffalo on Sunday Night was a warning to the rest of the AFC.
2. San Francisco 49ers
You have to love the trust Kyle Shanahan has in Brock Purdy, who is allowed to operate the offense at a level Shanahan never entrusted to Jimmy Garoppolo. Purdy is legitimately a great starting QB, and it’s taken me too long to get aboard that train.
3. Green Bay Packers
A tale of two halves against Minnesota in Week 4 displayed the floor and ceiling of this Packers team. It’s appointment viewing when they’re playing complimentary football, and pretty ugly when they aren’t.
4. Atlanta Falcons (3-2 after TNF)
The Falcons wins have been sloppy, and their losses close, so it feels like they’ll be a real contender in the NFC when things settle down for all their new pieces, specifically on offense.
5. New Orleans Saints
The Saints’ 2 victories were dominant showings on both sides of the ball, but their losses the last two weeks came with some disturbing ball-control issues and mental errors that need cleaned up if they want to compete with Atlanta and Tampa in the South.
6. Dallas Cowboys
Dak and CeeDee and the offense can get rolling, but the defense is really struggling to look anything like the ferocious unit we’re used to seeing in Big D.
7. Philadelphia Eagles
Jalen Hurts is one of several recent highly paid QBs to struggle in 2024. With the injuries at WR, Philly has to do a better job running through Saquon Barkley if they want to add more to the win column.
8. Los Angeles Chargers
Look up the word “almost” in any dictionary and you’ll see a picture of the Chargers’ logo. Almost a good offense. Almost a good defense. It’s exactly what I expected in year 1 of Jim Harbaugh.
9. Denver Broncos
This defense is leading the way, shutting down opposing passing games and being surprisingly sturdy against the run. If Bo Nix can keep developing, they’ll have a good year!
10. New York Jets
The Jets have to find consistent production from someone on offense when opponents take away Garrett Wilson, or this will be a long, frustrating season.
11. Indianapolis Colts
Indy’s going to be streaky on both sides of the ball, so opponents better hope they catch them on a down week. It’d be nice to see Anthony Richardson protect himself a little more so they can try to build some consistency.
12. Chicago Bears
A message for the “Jayden Daniels is better than Caleb Williams” crowd: Give this thing more than 4 games before we ditch on one of the best QB prospects in recent memory. He’s going to be just fine.
13. Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders are already shopping star receivers and talking about lack of effort despite 2 wins over highly-touted AFC North opponents. It feels like the sky is falling even though it shouldn’t be.
On the Brink (1-3)
1. Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals found the win column, finally, but this defense might legitimately be the worst in football. Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase have a lot of heavy lifting to do to get this team back in contention.
2. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are enduring multiple unfortunate injuries to star players at key positions and it’s derailing their season early. Getting those guys back is the only thing that can save them at this point.
3. Arizona Cardinals
This offense is still explosive and should be able to improve steadily throughout the year, but the defense has major holes and will likely keep AZ from really breaking through as a competent team in 2024.
4. Tennessee Titans
I feel pretty confident that Mason Rudolph is currently, and will probably always be, a better QB than Will Levis. That said, it’s in the best interest of the organization to really find out for sure. Levis likely starts again in Week 5 if healthy.
5. Miami Dolphins
Unfortunately for Fins fans, Mike McDaniel’s inability to get anything going on offense without Tua in the lineup might point more towards this not being a very good team than Tua being a very good quarterback.
6. New York Giants
Malik Nabers is the real deal and a real threat to end up leading the league in targets, receptions, and yards as a rookie despite Daniel Jones being his QB. That’s greatness.
7. Cleveland Browns
Watson played decent in Week 4, but he’s still Cleveland’s biggest problem. This team should be good, but so far they’re playing way below their potential with no turnaround in sight.
8. Carolina Panthers
Andy Dalton makes the Panther’s offense functional, maybe even good, but the roster is still one of the worst in the league, and it will be difficult to find many “W”s in 2024.
9. New England Patriots
Not much to say here other than, “Poor Jacoby Brissett.”
Stick a Fork in ‘Em (0-4)
1. Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence is regressing in real time, and it feels like a confidence issue more than anything after getting burned by his supporting cast and coaching for much of his career. The big question for JAX now: how long before Doug Pederson gets the pink slip from Shad Khan?
