NFL Power Rankings: Training Camp Edition
NFL Training Camps are underway, the Hall of Fame Game is in the books, and by this time next week, all 32 teams will have been on the field for their first Preseason action of 2024! It’s time to take a look at the league pecking order and where each NFL squad is at as the season approaches. We’ll spotlight one storyline for each team as we go 1-32 in my NFL Power Rankings: Training Camp Edition.
Let’s dive in!
1. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
Team Spotlight: Don’t be surprised if we see a return to a more big-play oriented offense with Patrick Mahomes lobbing strikes to the new speedsters in town in WRs Xavier Worthy (R) and Marquise Brown.
2. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Team Spotlight: Has Brock Purdy peaked already after just 2 years? If not, this is an even more dangerous Niners team a year after falling just short of a Super Bowl championship, and that should scare the rest of the NFC.
3. DETROIT LIONS
Team Spotlight: The Lions have been handing out cash to their stars left and right this season, but did they do enough adding on Offense to catch the 49ers?
4. HOUSTON TEXANS
Team Spotlight: The Texans are a trendy Preseason Super Bowl pick, and it makes perfect sense when you consider the depth, youth, and star power on both sides of the ball. If you’re not on the Texans bandwagon, what are you waiting for?
5. BALTIMORE RAVENS
Team Spotlight: Baltimore lost a lot of influential pieces on Defense this offseason, but that may not matter if Lamar Jackson and co. can make a Year 2 leap in Todd Monken’s already highly-productive offensive system.
6. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Team Spotlight: The Eagles are on their 3rd pair of coordinators in as many years, and despite a roster brimming with high-end talent, it’s fair to question whether the additions of OC Kellen Moore and DC Vic Fangio will be enough to get Philly back to elite form in 2024.
7. MIAMI DOLPHINS
Team Spotlight: Tua is a rich man now, and the weapons are locked and loaded in what should be a high-flying offense once again. We’ll see if Mike McDaniel can evolve enough throughout the season to overtake the Bills and fend off the Jets in what should be an extremely competitive AFC East
8. GREEN BAY PACKERS
Team Spotlight: Another big payday for a QB in Green Bay, where Jordan Love looks to build off a truly impressive final half of 2023. With as much hype as the offense is getting, though, the defense is quietly looking very strong for the Pack as 2024 quickly approaches.
9. BUFFALO BILLS
Team Spotlight: Tales of the demise of the Bills have been so overstated, it’s actually becoming trendy to hop back on the Buffalo bandwagon. Rightfully so, in my opinion, despite some significant losses on both sides of the ball this offseason. This is still a good team, and it’s still lead by the league’s best QB this side of Kansas City
10. DALLAS COWBOYS
Team Spotlight: Are we overreacting to the Cowboys quiet offseason? Probably. Are they going to be as good as they were last year? Probably not. Are they still going to be really good on offense and defense in 2024? Yes. Yes, they are.
11. LOS ANGELES RAMS
Team Spotlight: Sean McVay has done yeoman’s work turning over a roster that won it all just 3 years ago, then folded like a cheap lawn chair in an historic title defense collapse in 2022. Since then, McVay, QB Matt Stafford, and a young group of playmakers on both sides of the ball have turned things around, and this is a true playoff contender in the NFC.
12. NEW YORK JETS
Team Spotlight: If Aaron Rodgers stays healthy, the Jets could be one of 3 or 4 teams in the league to field a Top 10 offense and defense in 2024. That’s a big “if” for a 40-year-old QB coming off an Achilles tear, but even if the offense is average, this defense has a chance to be special.
13. PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Team Spotlight: Mike Tomlin’s squad is poised to field an elite defense on all 3 levels in 2024, and they might actually have a functioning offense for the first time in half a decade with Russell Wilson and/or Justin Fields guiding an Arthur Smith offensive scheme that has proven results in multiple stops. Especially if the Steelers land WR Brandon Aiyuk (reports are a deal is close), this team is being slept on across league circles.
14. CINCINATTI BENGALS
Team Spotlight: Joe Burrow’s health is obviously the big story in Cincy, and while early reports are good, whether Joey B can stay on the field or not is one of the 2 or 3 biggest factors of 2024.
15. CLEVELAND BROWNS
Team Spotlight: Everything is in place for a well-rounded roster with stars and depth on both sides of the ball. Can Deshaun Watson finally reward the Browns front office and coaching staff for their faith in him? It’s a huge story in Cleveland and in the entire NFL this season, because this Browns team is ready to be a real contender.
16. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Team Spotlight: Jacksonville just paid big bucks to Trevor Lawrence, and they’re going to ask him to do a lot again in 2024 to make them a contender in a suddenly very competitive AFC South. The supporting cast of weapons on offense will likely make or break the year for JAX.
17. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Team Spotlight: The Bucs feel as lukewarm as a team can feel this time of year, but there is optimism that Baker Mayfield and this offense can recapture their late 2023 magic and remain competitive for their 3rd consecutive NFC South crown.
18. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Team Spotlight: It’s all about Anthony Richardson’s health for this Colts team that has put together a rather impressive roster on both sides of the ball. This is a sneaky good team ahead of 2024.
19. ATLANTA FALCONS
Team Spotlight: Atlanta retooled at QB with Kirk Cousins and 8th overall pick Michael Penix, Jr. and this brand new coaching staff, led by former McVay disciples Raheem Morris and OC Zach Robinson, has a chance to spark a loaded offense and a regroup a suspect defense.
20. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
Team Spotlight: Geno Smith, though limited through the first two weeks of Training Camp, is reportedly as comfortable and in command as ever in an offense that has plenty of weapons. The defense, now led by new HC and defensive guru Mike MacDonald could be really good as well. A true sleeper team in the NFC!
21. CHICAGO BEARS
Team Spotlight: It’s all about generational Rookie QB Caleb Williams and how quickly he can become the guy in Chicago. The defense will be really good, and the offense has a ton of playmakers. We’ll see if Matt Eberflus and co. can get the most out of this group.
22. ARIZONA CARDINALS
Team Spotlight: The Cards are a sneaky team as well in the NFC West, with a healthy Kyler Murray and a retooled cast of weapons, this team could be dangerous on offense in 2024. The defense still needs a lot of work, but the vision is there. I’m excited to watch the growth of Jonathan Gannon’s group in 2024.
23. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Team Spotlight: Nobody really knows what to do with the Saints. They were surprisingly efficient on both offense and defense last year, and though they made minimal upgrades to the roster this offseason, the addition of new OC Klint Kubiak has a chance to really spark this offense with Derek Carr under center.
24. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Team Spotlight: Is Sam Darnold a candidate to replicate Geno Smith’s mid-career rise in Minnesota? He’s got a great cast of weapons, including the league’s best WR in Justin Jefferson. Or is the Rookie from Michigan, JJ McCarthy, ready to asset himself in the race for QB1? Time will tell, but this is a fascinating battle brewing in Minnesota!
25. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
Team Spotlight: The arrival of Jim Harbaugh helps, but this team has too much new and not enough talent, especially on defense, to compete right away in my opinion. They’ll be physical on offense and disciplined on defense, but this is a team that still feels a year or 2 away from climbing back into the AFC’s elite.
26. TENNESSEE TITANS
Team Spotlight: The Titans have quietly assembled a punch-you-in-the-mouth roster with plenty of exciting talent on both sides of the ball. If, and it’s a big “if”, 2nd-year QB Will Levis develops into a promising signal caller in 2024, this could be a dark-horse Wild Card team in the AFC South.
27. WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
Team Spotlight: Washington is all in on Rookie QB Jayden Daniels, who according to reports is tearing it up in Training Camp. There are a lot of holes on this roster, but HC Dan Quinn and co. put together a strong offseason that should have Washington fans hyped for 2024 and beyond.
28. NEW YORK GIANTS
Team Spotlight: The talk of Training Camp might just be Rookie WR Malik Nabers out of LSU. He’s been virtually unguardable for both Giants and Lions defenders with Detroit in town for joint practices ahead of their Preseason opening salvo. Keep an eye on this young man.
29. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
Team Spotlight: Word out of Vegas is the QBs are really struggling. That’s a shame considering the defense is brimming with stars and studs and the offense actually has some solid pieces up front and out wide. It could be a long year for Raiders fans watching some combo of Gardner Minshew and Aiden O’Connell.
30. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Team Spotlight: Drake Maye was my QB1 in the 2024 class, and though there have been some reported struggles early in Camp, he has flashed enough tantalizing tape to be in the consideration for the week 1 starting job. If he’s ready, give him the reins and see what he can do!
31. DENVER BRONCOS
Team Spotlight: The Broncos have a strong case for the league’s most talent-poor roster, and although there’s plenty of intrigue around the QB room, I can’t get past a mid group of weapons on offense and a lackluster squad on defense as well, outside of CB Patrick Surtain.
32. CAROLINA PANTHERS
Team Spotlight: Despite their ranking at 32, I have high hopes that QB Bryce Young can bounce back from a disastrous Rookie campaign under the tutelage of new HC and QB whisperer Dave Canales. The offense has some exciting pieces now, so any step forward from Young would be a win for Carolina.
