New look Jets offense is solid but bigger question marks remain
The New York Jets had a standout offseason last year and added veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers. The number of analysts and fans who predicted a playoff berth for the first time since 2010 was quite impressive. However, those expectations quickly faded after Rodgers tore his knee in week one against the Buffalo Bills.
The football team battled back in the contest and won 22-16 in overtime but the rest of the season would not go as planned with a revolving door at quarterback along with an almost nonexistent offense. The production, or lack thereof from the offense was eerily similar to the Pittsburgh Steelers who fired their offensive coordinator Matt Canada after the week 11 game versus the Cleveland Browns. While the Jets insist that their coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is the right man for the job, many believe he was part of the problem last season.
While the organization and the fanbase did not get the results they so desperately desired, the great news this offseason is that general manager Joe Douglas and his staff have been busy improving the team.
The new-look #Jets offense:
QB: Aaron Rodgers
RB: Breece Hall
WR: Garrett Wilson
WR: Mike Williams
WR: Allen Lazard
TE: Tyler Conklin
LT: Tyron Smith
LG: John Simpson
C: Joe Tippmann
RG: Alijah Vera-Tucker
RT: Morgan Moses https://t.co/dRvSLgS6JP— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) March 19, 2024
Just from the offensive side of the football, an area that needs a dramatic change after being ranked last, the team’s offseason moves have been quite noteworthy. Having a healthy Rodgers at the helm, along with the additions of offensive tackle Tyron Smith and guard John Simpson really help solidify the biggest issue that plagued them a season ago.
Adding veteran wide receiver Mike Williams will help the redzone production along with a mentorship of the entire receiving room, especially third year wideout Garrett Wilson.
Here is a list of all of the additions that the Jets made to better not only their offense but also their defense and special teams as well.
- Tyron Smith
- Mike Williams
- Morgan Moses
- John Simpson
- Tyrod Taylor
- Javon Kinlaw
- Isaiah Oliver
- Leki Fotu
- Solomon Thomas (Resigned 1 Year Contract)
- Thomas Morstead (Resigned a 2 Year Contract)
- Greg Zuerlein (Resigned a 2 Year Contract)
- Chuck Clark
While the entire Jets roster looks to be an improvement from last season, especially on offense, there are several big question marks that remain.
- Can Aaron Rodgers stay healthy?
- Will Nathaniel Hackett call plays effectively?
- How will the new offensive line gel?
- If Rodgers goes down again, will Tyrod Taylor be handed a better hand than what Zach Wilson had to deal with last season?
These are just four question marks that will determine if the New York Jets will make the playoffs in 2024. One thing that I know for certain, if Rodgers stays healthy and the team runs the football and protects him with the revamped offensive line, the team will win more games than last season.
If head coach Robert Saleh and his staff won seven games with Zach Wilson and a questionable line, there is no doubt in my mind that a double-digit win season could be on the way.
The only thing holding that from happening and for the Jets to reach the playoffs for the first time in 14 years is the health of Rodgers along with how creative Hackett can be this season if given another revolving door at the quarterback position.
