My theory on why Stefanski gave up play calling to Dorsey

Earlier this week during his midweek press conference, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski made a surprising announcement that he was turning over the offensive play calling to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. Dorsey was hired last offseason to be the Browns offensive coordinator and to replace Alex Van Pelt. Prior to being with the Browns, he was the offensive coordinator and play caller for the Buffalo Bills. In the middle of last season, he was fired by the Bills. This move by Stefanski has raised many questions and conspiracy theories as to why this happened.

Some podcasters, pundits and reporters are describing the move as an act of desperation. Others are saying that Stefanski’s hand was being forced into making this move by either general manager Andrew Berry or team owner Jimmy Haslam.  The actual phrase “Hail Mary” was being used by a longtime local Browns beat writer. If anyone is willing to bear it, they can look on social media or X specifically for many other theories and reasons for this decision by the Browns head coach. I however have my own theory for the timing of this move.

From the start of training camp in 2024, the Cleveland Browns were battling injuries that have carried over from 2023. This was especially prevalent on the offensive line. Most starters barely played in preseason games, this was mostly due to injuries and lack of practice time. The offensive line was healthiest last week versus Cincinnati, and it was not a coincidence that the Browns offense had its first 300-yard game. Having Nick Chubb back helped as well even if it was with limited snaps. Stefanski continued to call plays through the first seven games of the season because he knew that this offense was going to struggle, and he kept calling the plays to keep the heat off Dorsey. Now that the offensive line and Nick Chubb are getting healthier. Stefanski felt that the offense will be productive, and he can give the play calling to Dorsey. Keep in mind that I have no inside information. It is just my own theory. I like many other Browns fans want to see the offense improve and be productive. Productive enough to start winning games.
