Matt LaFleur Searches For New Leadership
The Green Bay Packers have lost a lot of beloved veterans over the last few seasons, especially from an offensive perspective. Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Marcedes Lewis, and most recently, Jon Runyan Jr. and David Bakhtiari have all moved on from Green Bay.
But, perhaps the toughest loss for Green Bay’s locker room occurred a few weeks ago when the team cut ties with Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones. Head coach Matt LaFleur spoke to reporters this week at the annual league meetings in Orlando about how he plans to fill Jones’ leadership void. This is what he had to say (The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman):
“Naturally, somebody’s going to have to step up. I talked to Jordan about this a little bit. He’s got a year under his belt as the starter. Now I expect more out of him. I think we all do. I think he expects it out of himself.”
Not only will LaFleur look to Love, who is entering his fifth NFL season, to be a true leader, but he will have to look hard to find his leaders on what is the youngest team in the league. He’ll have to look to Pro Bowl guard and soon-to-be sixth-year veteran Elgton Jenkins to be the leader along the trenches. Running backs Josh Jacobs (entering sixth NFL season) and A.J. Dillon (entering fifth NFL season) will also need to be strong leaders.
Defensively, Kenny Clark (entering ninth NFL season), Preston Smith (entering 10th NFL season), Jaire Alexander (entering sixth NFL season), and Rashan Gary (entering sixth NFL season) will need to be the vocal voices for LaFleur and new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
Great teams have great leaders and strong voices. The Packers need those who have the most experience playing to be the true leaders. That is what Jones, Bakhtiari, and those other great players in Green Bay brought to the table. Now, it is up to some of the younger veterans to step up if the Packers want to win the Super Bowl this season.
