Matt LaFleur Can Finally Build His Offense
It is Matt LaFleur’s time in Green Bay. After successfully transitioning from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love, he also has plenty of great, young skill-position players at his disposal. That right there is the key for Green Bay moving forward.
LaFleur made a key point at the annual league meetings this week in Orlando about how tough of a job it was to build a quality NFL offense without a ton of experience (per Ryan Wood):
“Before the draft last year, we didn’t know who was going to be on our team. So it’s hard to piece together an offense when you have no idea.”
The Packers started off slow and were 3-6 in their first nine games. Then, the team, especially the offense, got hot. Love had a TD:INT ratio of 18:1 over the final eight weeks of the regular season, and the Packers finished 9-8. They made it to within 15 minutes of an NFC Championship Game berth in what would’ve been Detroit.
Now, Matt LaFleur and offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich get to have another year with former rookie pass-catchers like Jayden Reed (led Green Bay in receiving in 2023), Dontayvion Wicks (29 first-down conversions), Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft (both tight ends combined for over 60 receptions and over 700 receiving yards). That’s in addition to soon-to-be third-year receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs.
Jordan Love threw the second-most touchdown passes in the league last season (32). He can thank his head coach and his host of talented pass-catchers for some of that. But speaking of his head coach, Matt LaFleur finally can build his offense in his own vision. That is bad news for the rest of the NFL, especially if everyone stays healthy. This is his and GM Brian Gutekunst’s team. They are continuing to build a great offense. One that is inching closer and closer to that of a Super Bowl-level unit.
