Should The Packers Add Isaiah Simmons?
Versatility is one of the most valuable attributes in the NFL. If a player can play multiple positions, there will always be a job for them. This is exactly the case with free agent linebacker Isaiah Simmons. After being traded from the Cardinals to the Giants prior to last season, Simmons started four games for the Giants and played in all 17 in 2023.
The former national champion has started at edge-rusher, linebacker, and safety throughout his college and professional career. Still just 25, he could prove to be a quality addition for any defense. That defense should be the Packers. Here is why GM Brian Gutekunst should sign the former first-round pick:
Unique Skillset
The former Clemson Tiger is one of the more talented and unique defenders in the league. He can rush the passer or be elite in pass coverage. The former All-American has over 300 total tackles, 215 solo tackles, and nearly 20 total pass deflections in four NFL seasons. He also has eight forced fumbles and 15 tackles for loss. It’s not that he is an elite player, it’s that he can play well at any level of the defense. Knowing Green Bay, there are a couple of positions that they are looking to fill and knowing Simmons, he can play each of those positions.
Where He’d Fit With The Packers
Green Bay could use some help in three areas. With Kingsley Enagbare’s ACL injury, Green Bay will need another edge-rusher for the majority of the season. With the release of veteran middle linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, there is a hole next to Quay Walker. Also, the defense still needs another safety to play alongside free agent signee Xavier McKinney. The good news is that Simmons has experience playing all of those positions, both at Clemson and in the NFL.
New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who will be looking to bring an aggressive mindset Green Bay, also coached against Simmons when he was at Boston College and Simmons was at Clemson. A two-year deal worth around $10 million could be a great deal for both sides.
