Is Jamal Adams an option for the Packers?

On Monday, news broke that the Seattle Seahawks had cut safety Jamal Adams, along with Pro Bowl safety Quandre Diggs. It appears as though Seattle may be entering a new era on defense after the hiring of new coach Mike MacDonald.

Another team that entered a new era last season was the Green Bay Packers. With Jordan Love taking over for Aaron Rodgers, some wondered if Green Bay be as good without Rodgers. Well, those people are very quiet right now. Green Bay came within 15 minutes of the NFC Championship Game. After just one season with Love, the Packers have gotten back into their win-now window.

A player like Jamal Adams could be an impactful piece for a defense that is looking for it’s edge again. Here is why the Packers should consider signing Jamal Adams once free agency begins:

A Hard-Hitting Force

Despite having a down season each of the last two years in Seattle, the former LSU Tiger has mainly been a big-time performer. He has recorded at least 75 tackles in five of his seven NFL seasons. But the key for Adams is his versatility. In 2020, his first season in Seattle after being traded from the Jets, he recorded 9.5 sacks as a safety. That does not happen very often. Adams plays like a linebacker at the safety position. He also set a career-high with 14 QB hits that year.

Now at 28 years of age, the former three-time All-Pro is hungry to return to his great ways. After playing in just 10 games combined over the last two seasons due to injury, the former All-American with almost 500 career tackles in the NFL is looking for a new opportunity.

Green Bay Could Use His Versatility

The Packers could lose three safeties in free agency. Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, and Jonathan Owens may all be playing somewhere else in 2024. So, GM Brian Gutekunst has his hands full looking for safety help. But perhaps the addition of new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will help make Gutekunst’s job a little easier. Hafley, throughout his coaching career, has coached great DBs like Richard Sherman, Ronde Barber, Darrelle Revis, Donte Whitner, and others. He knows how important the backend of a defense is.

Now, Adams is a little different because he is such a big-time player close to the line of scrimmage. He isn’t primarily used as a coverage safety. Perhaps Hafley could use Jamal Adams as a versatile strong safety. Someone who can come up, help out in run support, and get after the quarterback. Adding a great player who can do a lot of things very well makes everyone’s job easier. A multi-year deal should be considered on both sides.
