How Nick Chubb Broke the internet

The morning of July 15th ,2024, started like any mid-July morning in northeast Ohio. Browns fans were Tweeting on X the anticipation of training camp and preseason football. Other Cleveland Browns fans showed reasonable concern over Amari Cooper’s contact situation with the Browns front office. Unexpectedly that morning a 30 second video was tweeted on X, the video was Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb squatting 558 lbs. for 2 repetitions. Chubb had 2 major knee surgeries 8 months prior to this video. This video is believed to be from a documentary documenting the rehab of the pro bowl running back. The Cleveland Browns fan’s reaction was expected and with overwhelming optimism. That optimism is there because it has been a long road back for Nick Chubb.

On week 2 of the 2023 NFL Season, the Cleveland Browns visited the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. Late in the 1st quarter, Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb endured a season ending knee injury after being tackled by Steelers safety Mikah Fitzpatrick. Some say there was controversy from the tackle by Fitzpatrick. But Chubb didn’t think the tackle was dirty in any way. The injury was a metaphorical gut punch for the Browns and their fans. Chubb needed two reconstructive knee surgeries to even start his rehabilitation.  The last surgery was completed in the middle of November of 2023. Nick Chubb showed early signs of resilience after the surgeries.

On December 29th,2023, as a pregame ritual for Cleveland Browns games a special guest enters the stadium to smash a guitar of the opposing team. That night against the New York Jets the special guest was Nick Chubb. 6 weeks removed from his second major knee surgery, I witnessed Chubb walking unassisted and without a limp. He climbed the steps, smashed the guitar, and walked away with no struggle. After seeing that I felt optimistic Chubb’s return in 2024. And after seeing the recent video, I am excited to see number 24 take the field for the Cleveland Browns this season. And it looks like that will happen sooner than anyone ever expected.
