Houston Texans now have three #1 wide receivers on their roster
After trading for Stefon Diggs on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the Houston Texans arguably have three number one wide receivers on their roster.
After a sensational turnaround, the organization is in prime position with their offseason moves to make a deep playoff run in 2024. Last season, the team improved upon their 3-13-1 record and secured 10 wins and a dominant Wild Card victory 45-14 against the Cleveland Browns.
With the Diggs acquisition, quarterback C.J. Stroud will be throwing to an array of weapons, many of them who could each be considered as a number one receiver on any of the 31 other NFL football teams.
- Stefon Diggs
- Tank Dell
- Nico Collins
Diggs’ proven production and history as a number one receiver is evident, and he has nothing more to prove other than staying consistent in his play. For the Bills last year, he combined for 117 total receptions including playoffs for 1,256 yards and eight touchdowns. The Texans will have a playmaker who has experience in both the regular and postseason.
Despite his personality, which many consider to be quite questionable, Diggs is the type who can teach the younger receivers some fundamentals, which will directly relate to the on-field production from the entire receiving corps.
Before rookie receiver Tank Dell got hurt on a fluke accident (blocking and then getting his fibula fractured), he had a very solid rookie campaign. In just eleven weeks, Dell caught 47 receptions for 709 yards and seven touchdowns; which translates to a 15.1 yards per average. He is a dual threat and rushed on 11 attempts for 51 yards as well.
Dell has been considered a number one wide receiver due to his impressive production in his first NFL season and the fact that he consistently gets wide open due to his route running abilities.
All third year wide receiver Nico Collins needed was a starting caliber quarterback and that is exactly what he got in Stroud. Collins’ not just shined under new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, he displayed many reasons on why he can be a number one receiver in the NFL. Collins finished his third season with the best statistical performance, earning over 1,000 yards (1,461), nine total touchdowns, and averaged in his NFL career to date a 14.8 yards per play average, which is extremely rare.
Just last season, Collins averaged 16.2 yards per reception and is expected to continue that trend as he has been consistent in his short stint with the Texans.
All in all, the Texans hit the jackpot with their three receivers on their roster. With the newest addition in Diggs, it could be argued that any three of these athletes can start and be top tier at the “X” receiver position.
It will be interesting to see how the Texans do with all of these offseason moves and high expectations laid upon them. They certainly are the offseason darlings at the moment and that could be a scary thought as the New York Jets were in the same boat a season ago, and we saw just how that turned out.
