Green Bay Loses OT Yosh Nijman To Carolina

The key to building off of successful seasons for good teams in the NFL is to keep important free agents. Now, sometimes those free agents that are lost can be replaced in the draft or even during free agency. In order for the Packers to protect Jordan Love successfully again in 2024, they will have to build up their offensive line depth. They’ve already lost five-time All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari and starting guard Jon Runyan Jr. this offseason.

Now, they’ve lost former starting tackle and role player Yosh Nijman. He signed a two-year deal worth up to $15 million with the Carolina Panthers on Monday.

Nijman had a very interesting five-year stint in Green Bay. He went from being a practice squad player to a significant contributor after going undrafted out of Virginia Tech in 2019. He ended up playing in 67 total games from 2019 to 2023. He started eight games in 2021 and 13 in 2022. Those starting snaps came as a result of David Bakhtiari being sidelined with knee issues for the majority of the last three seasons. Nijman also played snaps on special teams too.

The Packers have lost three significant offensive linemen this offseason. Two of them being offensive tackles. Now, fans should expect to see the team address offensive line depth in the NFL Draft. Their presumed starting five next season appears to be, from left to right, Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, and Zach Tom.

The problem is behind those names. Who is going to come in if one of those players goes down? The good news is that the Packers, as great as they’ve been with quarterbacks, make their money along the trenches. They know how to churn out quality offensive lines. It will be interesting to see how GM Brian Gutekunst decides to address the depth issues moving forward as the NFL moves towards the latter stages of free agency and the early stages of draft season.
