Green Bay and Alexander Mattison Sounds Pretty Perfect

The Minnesota Vikings started things off by signing former Packers Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones to a one-year deal. Green Bay quickly replaced Jones with All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs. However, with running backs A.J. Dillon and Patrick Taylor now free agents, GM Brian Gutekunst needs to find another No. 2 running back.

Former Vikings starting running back Alexander Mattison would fit perfectly in Green Bay. Mattison was released after five seasons in Minnesota and one as the team’s official starter. Coming over to be a great compliment to Jacobs would be a great move for both Mattison and Green Bay. The Packers need to fight fire with fire. Here is why:

Mattison Is Best As A No. 2 RB

Being in the NFL is all about finding and learning earning your role. There is nothing wrong with Mattison being best as an RB2. Despite being a starter last year, The former Boise State star put up just 700 yards rushing for the Vikings. He also didn’t rush for any touchdowns. He’s just not a productive No. 1 running back. That doesn’t mean he can’t be a great compliment to a starting back like Josh Jacobs. After all, he did back up Dalvin Cook for four seasons and averaged over 4.1 yards per carry while in that role.

Perfect Skill Set For Green Bay

Despite his stats lacking in certain categories, he has a very complete repertoire as an NFL running back. He is a steady runner (averaging a career mark of 4.1 yards per carry). Also, he can catch the ball out of the backfield. In two out of the last three seasons, he’s caught 30 passes at least. Prior to 2023, Mattison had six total touchdowns in 2022. If he could combine his scrimmage yards total from a season ago and his touchdowns total from 2022, that would be the perfect formula for an RB2 in Green Bay behind Josh Jacobs (892 total yards, six touchdowns).

The former All-Mountain West performer is also still just 25 years of age and doesn’t have a bad injury history. A two-year deal makes perfect for both sides here.
