Gearing Up for Week 8: Which Giants Players Could Give the Steelers Fits?
Still riding the high of the win over the New York Jets last week, it’s time to start looking ahead to Week 8’s matchup against the New York Giants. At a glance, with the 5-2 Steelers producing 30+ points in their last two outings taking on a struggling 2-5 Giants team, this should be a win for the black and gold this week. The key takeaway here is should. Any given Sunday, right? Let’s take a look at some Giants players to watch that will be critical in Monday night’s outcome.
Malik Nabers
Despite the fact that the Giants have been struggling all season, especially on the offensive side of the ball, there is certainly a shining ray of hope for them in rookie WR Malik Nabers. Despite missing two games with injury, Nabers has caught 39 passes on 60 targets this season for 427 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is proving so far in his young career to be an outstanding talent and is most definitely someone Daniel Jones will be looking to frequently on Monday night. I suspect Joey Porter Jr. to shadow Nabers for most of the game, and keeping his production in check will be key for Pittsburgh to come away with a W.
Wan’dale Robinson
A third-year man from Kentucky, Robinson is another young receiver that has been a favorite target of Daniel Jones this year. Jones looked to Robinson when Nabers was out due to injury, but he also is seeing a large number of targets even with Nabers in the lineup. If Nabers’ production is limited by the Steelers defense, I suspect Jones to be looking Robinson’s way. He is another guy that needs some attention from the secondary for the Steelers to come away victorious. Through 7 games, Robinson has caught 43 passes on 67 targets for 303 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Tyrone Tracy, Jr.
While Devin Singletary started the season as the first running back on the depth chart and remains there for the Giants, rookie Tyrone Tracy, Jr. found success and played well in his absence while he was out a few weeks due to injury. His yards per carry average is currently higher than Singletary’s as well, as Tracy is averaging 4.4 YPC while Singletary’s YPC average is 3.9. Singletary returned from injury last week, but both backs were called upon equally in terms of numbers of carries. Tracy may not be getting much attention from media going into Monday’s game, but I predict that he will be an impact player in this game that Pittsburgh will need to prepare for and keep on their radar throughout.
Dexter Lawrence II
This one is a no-brainer. Lawrence is a monster of a man on the defensive line for New York who always must be accounted for. Adding to this, Lawrence has been on quite a hot streak recently, accumulating 17 total tackles and 8 sacks through the last 5 games. He will be quite a challenge for Pittsburgh’s offensive line who will need to have a great game to help keep Russell Wilson upright and could absolutely change the course of the game if given the chance. With this in mind, I expect Jaylen Warren to be in on a lot of passing downs to provide extra pass protection against the Giants’ front.
