Emmanuel Ogbah To The Packers?
Green Bay’s playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys in January was special. It was Jordan Love’s coming out party, and Green Bay’s introduction to Super Bowl contention. However, they did lose a key reserve player that night in edge-rusher Kingsley Enagbare. The second-year pass-rusher suffered a torn ACL, which may keep him out all the way until December.
The Packers now might have a depth problem on the edge. Yes, they have veterans Rashan Gary and Preston Smith back. But, rookie Lukas Van Ness played less than 50% of the defensive snaps a year ago. With Enagbare’s injury, should Green Bay take a look at adding a veteran pass-rusher for the season while Enagbare heals up? Perhaps a player like Emmanuel Ogbah could be the right fit. Here is why:
The Perfect Role Player
Ogbah is not a starter. He isn’t that type of player. He is more of a quality role player that brings extra juice off the bench. The 30-year-old has 42.5 career sacks. His best seasons came in 2020 and 2021 with the Dolphins when he recorded back-to-back nine-sack seasons. In 2021, the former Dolphin recorded a whopping 12 pass deflections for the Dolphins. His 101 career QB hits are notable too. The eight-year veteran also has a Super Bowl ring to his name, which could prove useful for the youngest team in the league in Green Bay.
How He’d Fit
The most likely role for Ogbah in Green Bay would be a reserve role behind Rashan Gary or Preston Smith. He could give the veterans a rest every once in a while and provide Jeff Hafley’s defense with some much needed energy. Also, he has a history with current Packers linebackers coach Anthony Campanile, who was with him in Miami.
There is some familiarity for Ogbah when it comes to the coaching staff, plus this team is ready to go win a Super Bowl. In the latter stages of free agency, the Packers could take advantage of the slow market and ink Ogbah to a one-year deal worth around $4 million. If he pours in five or six sacks, this signing would be a brilliant one.
